This being a Neil Gaiman collection, it is somewhat uneven...plenty of brilliance which sometimes has to push and shove just to get the elbow room it deserves. Fortunately, even the parts that don't work quite so well (I'm thinking particularly of the poems, as well as his continuing fascination with stories and dreams - a fascination which, while perfectly palatable the first several times, loses a bit of its sparkle after a while) manage to not-work-quite-so-well in a way that makes you sigh, roll your eyes a bit, and say with a tired smile, "Ohh, NEIL." That is, the guy is as charming as ever, and also manages a few truly affecting stories. A few? Several? A half-dozen? I don't want to be too specific here. There's a lot to love, if, as I do, you would kind of like to be Neil Gaiman when you grow up.

Fantastic book. Well worth the long read. Not many books move me to cry, but this did it twice.

I think what I most enjoyed about the book was the way conflict was handled. It this case it was the Roman Catholic church and a fear that a doctrinal question was mishandled and what the consequences might be if.... There was also quite a active conflict between tradition and what might better suit current needs. Also how this should be dealt with. the setting is one where an elderly and physically inform (although not mentally) pope is about to pass on, and every one knows that another conclave will be coming soon. And one candidate could compete with the historical Borgia family for what he is willing to do to get the position. Well, written with three dimensional characters, well presented situations, and a darn good story!

I got my 12-year-old sister to read this, and she was hooked on it instantly like I was at her age. I guess that means we both really like screwed-up things.

This was an absolutely remarkable book, even if the reader does not know the circumstances surrounding its writing and its author. Suite Francaise is beautiful, in some places exquisitely calm and genteel, and in others the horror is so vast and all-encompassing that it hits right into the core of your being. Yes, it becomes less keenly edited by the end, but I was really astonished at how close to final form it was. The mistakes, as left in by the translator, only highlight the disastrous circumstances from which she was writing. I cannot quite imagine having such clear-headed analysis of current events, let alone writing it into a complex narrative with relative even-handedness (even-handed derision, perhaps) for both French and Germans. This is another required read, people.

I loved the romance of this, the love and fights of the couple. It was the conversation that lacked for me. The dialogue was kind of cheap and almost silly sometimes. It was a nice easy read. I think I might have been excited about the concept of the plot too much, then the cheesy dialogue made it all seem silly. It was good, but I think it could have been better.

This book assited and mirrored a major life change for me. The relationship of "eve" and the "devil" as represented in the characters had so much original thought and provacative dialogue. Womenkind before the fall fascintes me, and this really breeded and fed my cause.
