One of my top 10 books.
Hard to read at times, but definitely worth it.
اين كتاب من رو با حال و هواي زندان هاي پيش از انقلاب و دوران نزديك به انقلاب بسيار آشنا كرد و اطلاعات جالبي به من داد

I'll admit when I was first given this book and I read the title, I immediately dismissed it as fluff. Typical judging a book by its cover attitude. However, having grown up an avid comic book collector I cracked it open and was pleasantly surprised. The author knows his comics and touches on most major graphic novels such as Maus, The Watchmen, Road to Perdition, Sandman, V for Vendetta, among many others, and also delves into mainstream DC and Marvel comics. The book's lone appendix "Essential Graphic Novels and Collections" provides a really great concise overview of some of the more recognized works that have been published over the past couple of decades. More impressive than the books that were covered was the thought that went into the writing. Garrett is a longtime comic book fan as well as a professor of film, fiction, and American literature. As a result, he approaches many of the topics in an intelligent manner much beyond the usual "fanboy" fare. Holy Superheroes! is categorized more as philosophical reading but is worth checking out, whether you're a fan of comics, pop culture, or philosophy.
This story was an amazing look into a time and place far-removed from where I am today. I loved that it opened the door to long-ago cultures and customs. It was interesting and intriguing. I enjoyed learning about the ancient practice of foot-binding and about the relationships between mothers/daughters, men/women, secret sisters. We read this for our book club and although I wasn't keen on starting it, once I did I was hooked.

I enjoyed the book but I really couldn't understand how Jane could fall in love with Mr. Rochester. He wasn't particularly nice or doting (until they were to be married) and even they he obviously wasn't the most honest guy! She seemed like she must have had low self esteem if she was going to settle for that shmoe. Luckily she didn't hook up with her cousin...gross. I was happy she finally found some kindred spirits in her cousins.

I read this a while ago and so can't remember exactly what I meant to write, but I remember debating whether or not to gve it two or three stars. I ended up goign with three, since Lara Adrian is a first-timer author for me. The prologue was excellent. Everything else was subpar. It picked up a bit getting towards the end, though. Um... between the hero and the heroine, I felt the lust, but no love, so all the declarations of love passed me right over. All in all, it was an okay story. Just okay.
The first worked so well as my workout book, I'm using the second as the same. Of course, that means, with all the travel, I haven't gotten to read it as much the past two weeks, but I'm about half done and really loving it!
Not finished yet, so can't say 5 stars, but it's on it's way! A couple favorite passages: (From Thomas Merton's forward) "The compulsion to cure is like action without a deep and silent center. We want to overcome problems and adversities and want to change at all costs. An alternative is to care for ourselves, each other, and our world. We wouldn't need change and cure if we were in a constant caring mode." From the first section "Somewhere we know that without a lonely place our lives are in danger. Somewhere we know that without silence words lose their meaning, that without listening speaking no longer heals, that without distance closeness cannot cure. Somewhere we know that without a lonely place our actions quickly become empty gestures." Both relate to each other more than I initially noticed (until typing this). Yay for more enlightenment!
