The last romance novel I read was back in my college days so reviewing this book is going to be a real challenge because I have nothing in recent memory to use for comparison. The book is written by a young Filipino mother, Samantha Sotto. This is her first novel. Sotto's writing style while creative was a bit distracting at times and thus I have to give it a ***. Sometimes too many adjectives and metaphors can ruin a reader's focus. Her book was peppered with a more than generous amount of unnecessary and annoying tongue-in-cheek remarks about the most mundane thought or action. In terms of character development, I have to give this story a **. I felt that the writer spent too much time on "off-the-beaten-path" commentaries on a few European cities and forgot to develop the characters making up her story. In the end, the premise of an immortal Max was not really explained very well. It left me wondering if it would have been easier for Sotto to eliminate some of the Shakespearean tragedies in her book and spent more time trying to lock in a more believable and easier to follow plot from a mortal to an immortal Max. Thus, I have to give this element of the novel a ***. As a debut book, I have to give it a ***** for EFFORT. I think for a first book, she did a better than average job of weaving a storyline that is not your typical girl-meets-boy-and-they-lived-happily-ever-after. Trust me, this one is not a generic Romeo and Juliet story. Sotto shows incredible promise as a novelist.

I've found another author to add to my favorites list! Great story and characters, just wish there was MORE.

It was enjoyable, but I couldn't ignore the obvious inconsistencies from the rest of the series. I know he talked about it in the Afterword, but still... Also, the enemies in this book seem one-dimensional. The whole Alessandra storyline, while fun to read, was not really necessary. But I love how OSC developed the last chapter of Ender's Game. And I like the idea of how the Buggers communicate. And that many loose ends from Shadow of the Giant came together. On a related note, I like that there's a character named Abra. I half-expected him to teleport away any moment. Pokemon reference, anyone? ;)

It was fine, I guess. It was just about the longest, most drawn out book of all time (the Twilight series excepted). The writing in the first couple pages and the last couple pages was distractingly bad. The rest of it was pleasant and sappy and nice and likeable but soooooooooooooo long!
The best of the the Gothic novels, which is not saying much. Yet, Elizabeth's modernity is surprising, and the author should be applauded at least for that alone.

While I didn't agree with her politics, I think Elizabeth Edwards was a phenominal woman! She embodies so much strength and character. Someone I look up to for sure. A great inspirational and positive book, although at times very sad.

More like 3.5 for me. It's a good story, but failed to engage me to the level the previous two books have. It felt like it was all about a specific plot point (which I won't explain further because it is totally spoiler-y), and while well-written and interesting, I could never shake the contrived feeling (and as all fiction is contrived, this told me my level of engagement was not where it should be). I suspect this was a book that needed to be written as a lead up to the next, so overall I was a little disappointed.
