Four Souls fills in the details of a number of stories that exist in the background of The Last Report of the Miracles at Little No Horse - I'm not sure (unlike No Horse) that it stands alone. It's shorter, less intricate, and therefore less compelling, but there's still an enormous amount to like. Not least among the things I loved was Erdrich's reflection on the big houses in Minneapolis, their legacy as holding the spirits of trees and land from the northern reservations. It's a stinging rebuke, all bound up in a description of architecture. I appreciated knowing more about Fleur's story - it made some of No Horse take on extra significance, and I love visiting all the places the Kashpaws and Nanapush exist.

I don't care if it's a total cliche to say this is one of my favorite books. I love the characters, the style of writing, the story. All of it. Holden Caulfield is not someone I admire, but he's someone I can relate to on many levels.

This rating is just for the Cat and Bones story, since it's all I read in the book. LOVED it. I really felt for Bones and the family issues he had to deal with in this one. I enjoyed Cat and Ian teaming up to fight the bad guy...I love anything where Ian has a lot of page time. Ian on bringing new people under his protection: "Because while I don't require morals from members of my line, I do expect loyalty." That's Ian to a "T" - he might be the fun, or as Cat says, sleazy, guy you can't help but give a hard time too, however, no one can ever doubt his loyalty to his friends. I started reading the Argeneau story, but didn't go beyond the first couple chapters. I've read a few books in the series, but this one just didn't grab me. The hero is an older man, probably in his 60s or 70s, and the heroine is 25. Eww. Granted, I'm sure something happens where he's turned and goes back to his "prime" age, but I didn't really care to read that far to find out.

Have to preview this one before reading it to class as Peter is now in sixth grade and god knows what pubescent nightmares Judy Blume could have cooked up for him ... better not be any raincoats on laps in math class. Now that I'm finished, I really liked it. So, did my third graders. They're all obsessed with the characters and have given themselves "Fudge" names and are trying to get me to call them Jimmy Fargo, Peter, Sheila, Libby, Fudge, etc. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book, though. It was well-written and fun. I'm reading Fudge-a-Mania to them right now. I'm not liking it as much so far, but we'll see.

One of the girls at work gave me this chilling and very sad book to read about a family left devastated by the Australian health system. I found it to be an excellent reminder to all of us working with families of how your words and attitudes can affect someone's life. I don't think I can write another entry into someone's medical file without reflecting on this. Thanks Carmel for a great book!
