Loved the Scottish angle and the games...wish I could see the characters in their kilts!

Thoughtful, challenging and fascinating, the best book on Christianity that I have ever read.

At first, I liked this. I thought the characters were interesting and the plot was quite an interesting and slightly different idea. However, by about half way through I knew who the culprit was and began to piece everything together. In many ways this spoiled the second half of the book as it was evident there was still supposed to be tension at this point, but this was gone for me. For this reason, I didn't fully enjoy this novel. Saying that, I think the character of Jack Caffrey is really interesting and leaves lots to the readers imagination. What's his past and demons? These are things that kept me interested in this book in the hope they would be answered. Alas, they weren't in this instance, but it would certainly make me want to read more of Mo Hayder's books in the hope of finding out. Despite the predictable plot, I would read more of Hayder's books as I did like the characters, the overall premise and think that further novels wouldn't be so predictable.

This was a cute book. A little hard with with British slang, but you get the idea.

As a new mom this one is both hard to read and also something I can relate to - you feel such empathy for Brown's struggles, but also recognize the universality of finding joy in your children. I admire Brown's honest recognition of the sense of upheaval, inadequacy, and loss that Walker's disabilities creates and find his efforts to use his experience to drive towards a deeper understanding of the inherent value in the lives of the disabled very moving.

When Nell Sweeney, an Irish girl with a rather dubious (and mostly unexplained, in this book) past assists her physician employer during a difficult birth in 19th century Massachusetts, she has no idea what she is getting into. The pregnant woman is a chambermaid for a Boston Brahmin family, and the child is adopted by them. Nell is hired away to be the child's governess almost at once. When baby Grace is about three years old, the family is embroiled in scandal as their eldest son, William, is accused of murder. William had been presumed dead at Andersonville ... but is very much alive. Nell's employer sets her the task of finding a way to prove William's innocence -- despite mounting evidence of his guilt. A well constructed and entertaining "whodunnit" that kept me guessing the entire time.

A book that I didn't want to end, even as I didn't want to put it down. McDonald does an admirable job of capturing the magic intensity and chaos of Brazil. The were bits of information that were inaccurate or omitted (such as details of Candomble), but in other respects the book seemed amazingly on target for an outsider (but then, I am one too, so I may have missed some things.)
