I always look forward to a Lisa See book. She and Amy Tan have become favorites of mine in the last year. I remember wanting this book so badly after I finished Shanghai Girls. I couldn't wait to read it. I wish that they hadn't come out so far from each other. There were pieces I couldn't remember as well as I wished. I can't imagine reading this book without having read Shanghai Girls. I think it would still be a good read but I walked into this book already knowing Pearl, May, and Joy. I would certainly recommend reading both of them back to back. I could even hope for a third book to further explore what is to become of this family.

This story was excellent. Not as easy to read as The Hobbit, sort of long, and sometimes a bit boring, but overall a story of epic proportions that was well worth the read.

This book alternates point of view between the two main characters, a boy and a girl, so I think it could be enjoyed by either. Kids will probably better relate to bickering/tension between the two than I could. Also, I felt that there were some unclear moments where the author didn't give clear reasoning for things that were happening, they just did because she wrote it. It's a good adventure, though, and a lot of kids probably won't care about that. Also, it made me curious enough to look up some stuff about Vermeer and look at his paintings, so if it can inspire others to do so as well, that's pretty great! Because it fits so nicely in our summer reading theme and I think kids will like it, I'm going to booktalk it. Here it is:“Dear Friend, I would like your help in identifying a crime that is now centuries old.” Thus begins the mystery, “Chasing Vermeer” by Blue Balliett. Interspersed w/ code, this book invites you to help solve the mystery of whether all the paintings attributed to Vermeer were actually painted by him. Two students, Calder and Petra, who alternately narrate the tale, become caught up in an international art theft in their quest to help solve the mystery. Side note: I looked up Vermeer’s paintings online so I could see what some of the paintings they talk about in the book look like.

The book explains why Mr. March goes off to war, leaving his house full of daughters behind. It was a very interesting concept, but the author paints March as a pretty unforgiving character, who does not lend himself to being rooted for. I really didn't care what happened to him. I just wanted to put myself out of my misery.

I'm in two minds about this book. It's nicely written, has cool characters (especially Beezle, the gargoyle), an interesting setting and an even more intriguing mythology attached to it. Still the story felt off to me. There were some incongruities that bugged me and besides that the whole set up felt too big. Too many things came popping up too close together. I'd have liked this story better if some things were left a mystery, only to be revealed in a future book. Still, I liked it enough to give this series another chance and read book two, if only to see where Henry will take the story next after the big things that happened in this book.

See, comic books are adult...

The idea of parallel worlds has been very present in my reading lately, and is superbly touched upon in His Dark Materials. I have been looking for something I am unable to put down, and I have found it. My only regret is that there are only three books in the series. Fantastic fantasy, found in the Young Adult section, but suitable for everyone.

Weird, but interesting! I was going to say the ending was unsatisfying, but it wasn't really, it was just odd.
