I read this book during a recent holiday in France. It's a well written and moving account of heroism and love in the Catalan Pyrenees starting from the end of the Spanish Civil War through to the liberation of France at the end of the Second World War. Recommended to anyone who cares about history and the struggle against Fascism, particularly if you like the countryside around the Pyrennes.

I bought this book a few years ago when I had a graduate assistantship and was helping develop programs for the university to help retain first year students and first-generation college students. This book came recommended, and with the demands of graduate school and a loathe for reading for leisure (since I was reading oh so much already for school), on my shelf it sat. I really wish I had read it then, especially since I was teaching undergraduate courses simultaneously (no wonder i had no time to read for leisure!). This book was conducted as an anthropological study by an anthropology professor. She decided to learn about the college culture (and figure out why her students didn't participate, read assigned readings, or do any optional or additional work for the class) by becoming a freshman student herself. It was fascinating to read about the cultures, attitudes, and behaviors of students from such a perspective and gain insight into how students live their lives in college. It made me reflect upon some of my attitudes and behaviors in undergrad and graduate school, and much of the book wasn't too far away from my personal experience. It also reminded me how easy it was for me to forget that after I graduated and became a professor myself. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is working in the college environment, has college-age students of their own, or for someone who enjoys learning and reading about anthropology. It was a quick and easy read, certainly written for the average reader, but posed many elements of reflection. Enjoy!

I've been an avid reader of Glenn Greenwald's writing on Salon.com and his former blog "Unclaimed Territory" for some time. A former constitutional lawyer from New York, in this book Glenn has turned his keen eye toward the Bush Administration and it's unprecedented increase of executive power. Through analysis of the Yoo memorandum and other quasi-legal arguments that BushCo. has put forward to legitimize their increasingly authoritarian governing (which is a term that can only be loosely used there), Glenn offers an insight into the minds that have crafted this power grab as well as a repudiation of the concept of an over-powerful executive branch. A short read, and well worth it. If you like this, be sure to check out his next book, A Tragic Legacy, due out June 26 from Crown.

Fatsis's account of entering the world of competitive Scrabble is infinitely entertaining. I enjoyed it so much that it inspired me to buy a CD-Rom version of Scrabble and I now stay up until 2 a.m. most nights playing it. Hmmm, maybe reading Word Freak wasn't the best thing...

I wanted to give this one 4 stars, but I just couldn't. I was enthralled by the book for pages at a time and then completely turned off at the turn of a page. I felt that the writing itself was excellent (hence the 3 stars) however the plots and sub-plots often used old, well-worn tricks that got a bit tiresome. This was a difficult book for me to pick up and read amidst taking care of the kids and while feeling sleepy. I couldn't stay interested in the story and would often lose the thread of it and have to go back a few pages to reacquaint myself. I am looking forward to discussing it at my book group to see how others felt. At the end of the day it is a good read but I would have probably put it down and started another book if it hadn't been for book club.
