Ramachandra Guha's mammoth work 'India After Gandhi' is one of the finest books on Indian history post independence that I have read so far.His academic prowress is clearly evident from the amount of cross references, quotes that litter the book throghout.Indian history is transformed into a riveting saga with larger than life characters and defining events.Written by a historian and academecian, the writting is far from the expected text book style drone.Instead it is spell binding and history has never been so interesting and lively.Right from the birth of the nation,to growing pains,to the transformation undergone in political/economic spheres this is a truly comprehensive account. This is Guha-both the historian and writer- at his best.

This achingly sad and lyrically written memoir of a being raised by abusive, neglectful grandparents and having a schizophrenic mother was almost too painful to read. I couldn't put it down.
A great piece of historical fiction, Plaidy takes readers through the childhood and rise to power of William the Conqueror. This book is a masterful mix of history and characterization of one of England's great rulers.

Have you read the Odyssey? ok, well, even if you haven't, it's well worth taking the 2 hours to get through Atwood's spin on the epic. We all know about Odysseus's travels. But what goes on with the little lady at home? Atwood breathes life into Penelope for perhaps the first time in history. Prepare to be enraptured by Atwood at her best. "It's always an imprudence to step between a man and the reflection of his own cleverness."

There are probably 8.24 million books based on Cinderella. But this rewrite was an interesting read with enough twists that made it unique. It was a cute, quick read. The ending was a little abrupt maybe, but it was a fun young adult book. I liked switching between narrators. It made it more interesting.

This was a lot of basic parenting advice, some seemed dated (I think it's 20 yrs old) with a few good reminders on cultural parenting (respect, racism, etc) that parents of white children don't necessarily realize the importance of in black culture.

This was a wonderful book for a pre-teen as a young girl I had read this book and it was so moving to me and my little life at the time.

I was surprised with this book. Yes, it's YA and young but still it tells a good story with surprises, growth, awareness, etc. Without giving out any spoilers, suffice to say that this book isn't creepy in a "horror film" way but more interesting in a "alternative explanation" way of looking at the world. It has interesting concepts. The acknowledgement states that the author found the photos in garage sales and flea markets, saving them from the dump. He wrote the story around these randomly found photos, which I think was a truly imaginative and creative idea. I don't think I'd read the sequel. This book is young and I'm happy with where it ends.
