I would give this book a 4 1/2 but that is not an option. Ijust love the way Pat Conroy writes and I feel like I am living in the book as I read it....It is hard to let the characters go...Although a couple of these were CRAZY.

I think that the most amazing thing about this book is how much John Widstoe knew 50+ years ago! He talked about probiotics, omega 3 fatty acids, the sugar/diabetes connection, keeping our bodies alkaline ... all kinds of things that I thought were relatively modern discoveries. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to more fully live the Word of Wisdom. Not because it's fun reading - it isn't. It is written sort of like a textbook with lots of scientific studies and statistics. However, the information is valuable and so important. He writes chapters on many different phrases from the actual Word of Wisdom. For example, there are chapters on alcohol, tobacco (those were the most difficult for me to get through because I didn't really need to hear them), wheat, barley drinks, meat sparingly, etc. I love how Widstoe repeatedly points out that Joseph Smith must have been inspired because much of this information wasn't known when he received the Word of Wisdom. Not light, easy reading, but fascinating and enlightening. Guess I'm changing my diet ...

So. Fertig mit lesen! Fazit: super!

This is one of those disturbing cautionary tales about the dangers of unfettered parental concern and ambition for one's children (in this case, a father and his son). It moves along at a fast clip, and leaves the reader with much to think about. Terrific.

This was my first Jodi Picoult book, and I listened to it on audio. The character development was excellent, and the subject matter was simultaneously interesting and thoroughly heart wrenching. I thought the ending was somehow rushed- as though once that bombshell dropped- boom- the book was over.

Decent read, but frustrating as well, because although the book is titled The Rebecca Notebook and Other Memories, there's actually very little in it concerning her most famous novel except for the early preliminary notes that she jotted down regarding each chapter of Rebecca and a first draft of Chapter One. Unfortunately, 40 years had passed between the publication of this book and Rebecca, and du Maurier's memories of her original thoughts and creative process while penning Rebecca had been dimmed by time and memory loss. There were too many statements like: "I don't remember why I did this" or "I can't recall why I wrote it this way". Like I said, very frustrating. I had hoped to get more into the writer's mind, but it just wasn't there. Fortunately, the "other memories" section saved this book from being a total wash out. There was a section devoted to short stories du Maurier had penned throughout her career. My absolute favorite being The House of Secrets, which was really her "love letter" to Menabilly (the house she once lived in and based the house from Rebecca on: "Manderley"). For anyone who has a passion for old houses like I do, I could fully relate to du Maurier's almost obsessive desire to possess this house and learn it's secrets. Anyone who loves old houses will be able to relate to this story entirely. The final portion of the book was devoted to some of du Maurirer's personal memoirs and character studies of people from her life like her father and grandfather. I found this section to be interesting and informative but also a bit sad, as she explores widowhood, growing old and death. All in all, I'm happy I picked this up at the library, but I do think the title is a misnomer.
He is truly a poetic and eloquent wordsmith! Beautiful book!
I have never felt so emotionally involved in a book before. Loved this book.
