James McBride has an essay in the April 2007 National Geographic about his aversion to rap and hip hop which he ultimately regrets. It was pretty good and I was surprised to hear his opinions on the genres given his relevations in the book.

Not as great as Teach Like Your Hair's On Fire, but inspiring nonetheless.
I simply gave up on this one. I was truly looking forward to it. The premise was intriguing, even a bit goofy. But I simply could not get past the lack of punctuation that indicated conversations. I tried. I really did. But that was just too distracting and caused me to have to reread too much. Now on to the next one!
A Pilgrim’s Daughter, from Gloria V. Phillips, is the sequel to A Pilgrim Passing Through, a Canadian Christian Writing Award Finalist. It follows Alicia Miller from her early childhood to adult years. Set during 1930 and 1940, Alicia experiences the struggles of living through the Great Depression and the Second World War. Rich in Canadian history and set in Toronto, the author has created a character that grows in wisdom and in faith in God, while facing the difficulties of the depression, a polio epidemic and a looming second world war. I delighted in bits of history I had never heard in school and found myself thinking this should be in school libraries across Canada. Suitable for children ages 12 and up, this book will serve to both entertain and enlighten those too young to know the difficulties of this era.

This historical mystery has all of the elements I love; It is set in the latter years of the 18th century. It features two free-thinking, unconventional characters that take it upon themselves to solve a series of murders, & in doing, so, become friends. Unlike other novels in this genre, the two main characters are older than usual, and not romantically involved. The male character is in his 50's and is an antisocial anatomist; the female, a naval officer's wife and mother of two, managing her country estate. The author gives us hints of the revolutionary fervor sweeping Europe at the time, as a interesting backdrop. The secondary characters, villagers & local nobility, as well as London riff-raff, add color & depth to the story. Interwoven throughout is the story of how a carefully plotted blackmailing begins.

I read this book somewhat against my will. Couldn't sleep, it had appeared in my house, (Claire left it here maybe?) and it was handy. So. In general I hate Joan Didion -- not because of how she writes, exactly, but I have a feeling I would hate her if I met her. I'll grudgingly admit that she might be a good writer, and there are some nice bits in this book. She does have a precise way of putting things and there were times when I (again grudgingly) identified with her. But she represents a kind of snobby apolitical/conservative intelligentsia that leaves me a bit cold.

At first when I finished the book, I felt so bored! but you know, it shows the fast pace our life has.
This is quite a spectacular book, and I do not use that word often. The writing is detailed and precise and vivid. The characters are well-sketched and strong, and the story is whimsical and real all at the same time. This book worked for me chiefly because of the fluid writing. It sounds corny, but the writing was almost magical. I loved the way Mandery groups words together, setting them so that each one seems perfect in it’s place. I am truly enamored.
