I love Gary D. Schmidt as an author. (He wrote Lizzie Bright . . . one of my top three books from 2008) Wow! His writing style is fabulous. I have listened to the audio and read this book. (Alas, a library copy . . . I am waiting for it to come out in paperback, but I must have this book!) It works well as a fun introduction to Shakespeare, besides being a good tale. It makes you laugh, it might make you cry . . . I found it through the Utah Beehive Book Award nominations.

Still, let's see what how 'animalistic' these animals -and humans- truly are.

Reminded me of a cross between Handmaid's Tale and the movie The Village. Plus zombies. I often got irritated with Mary - and the other characters. When they can predict zombie-encrouchment, why don't they prepare more? Create bridges earlier, move food to more secure locations, etc? You'd think they'd do this based on necessity, and their inaction frustrated me to no end. Also, the twist on Mary and the romance. On the one hand, I liked it, but I felt the depth of her own confusion about her own feelings. I missed a more thorough depiction of a happy time (a la in the woods in Graceling) - it was glossed over and angsted up. The ending was nice, but I wanted more detail about the civilization, the path numbering and the mechanics of this world. I had to think for a bit before I understood why it was compared favorably with Hunger Games. And I think I agree on at least one character point. I really want to see how Catching Fire continues to romance element. Overall, I think I'm just SO different from Mary that being stuck in her head frustrated me. I trudged through the angsty parts and wanted more world explanation. I feel like a lot of the mystery the author hints at she never fully explains, so I felt holes. Which were of course consistent with Mary, but... I liked it. A lot. And the cover is killer. But...

I recently finished this book for the second time, and I think enjoyed it even more. Probably because I wasn't reading it for an independent 9th grade book report. When are they going to make a movie?!?! And Pete (Peter Jackson) why don't you stop being a baby and just help New Line out; I doubt that you are strapped for cash.

The Return of Captain John Emmett by Elizabeth Speller is both an engrossing mystery and a look at the aftermath of WWI in England that "grabbed" me at the beginning and kept me guessing until the end. Laurence Bartram has returned to England, having lost both wife and child in childbirth while he was away fighting in the trenches of France. Most of his contemporaries have either been killed in battle or irrevocably changed. Lawrence himself is adrift and aimless, alienated from everyone except his bluff old school friend, Charles. Another old school friend's sister, Mary Emmett, writes to him in the hope that he can help her understand the purported suicide of her brother John. Captain John Emmett was AWOL from a convalescent hospital specializing in the treatment of shell-shocked veterans. While Laurence doesn't think he can help Mary, he is interested enough in Mary, as well as John's suicide to start asking questions. With Charles' help the investigation proceeds, revolving around a military execution that Captain Emmett was forced to lead. Almost all the surviving participants in the firing squad have met violent ends after the war. The mystery of Captain Emmett's death is very well plotted with enough re herrings to satisfy "who done it" fans. However, I found the evocation of the period most compelling, as well as the illumination of that most bankrupt of British Army practices, the execution of traumatized soldiers for cowardice. I would highly recommend The Return of Captain John Emmett to fans of Charles Todd's Ian Rutledge series and Jacqueline Winspear's Maizie Dobbs series. A patron recommended this. I enjoyed it. I especially liked his portrayal and explanation of the dog's perception of death. A bit "deus ex machina" at the end. But otherwise nicely done. Not enough to it to feel I'd really learn or discover anything new on a re-read, or enjoy it enough for a second go round. Just a quick fireside read.
