To read.
It’s been quite some time since I’ve given a book anything higher than the 3 stars range so believe me when I say that I enjoyed Fat Car tremendously—that is to say that not everyone will love this book. It seems to me that I’m the hopeless romantic person, always thinking that the childhood friend should be the one with you forever. What I appreciated the most was the fact that there was path to figuring that Matt was the one. It wasn’t just shy glances between the two, there was tears, blood (not real blood just metaphorically), and an actual disconnection then reconnection before it all made sense. It only took one really odd diet, one disgusting boyfriend, one hormone-crazed/kind of hot yet completely geeked out boy, and a sweat drenching science project. Cat goes through a metamorphosis through eating nutritiously. It might have came off as preaching as some would say, but to those who considered themselves meaterians it sheds some light. Also the fact that the book included fun vegetarian dishes was a plus in my book. I always thought I could never survive by salads alone but maybe it is possible—just not for me, I love meat too much. Overall: Authors and readers you’ve found my weakest. I enjoy clichés with a twist.

This is a young adult book? Hard to believe a story narrated by death and featuring considerable angst is fodder for young teens, but perhaps kids grow up faster these days. The story follows a young German girl and her adoptive family through the years prior to Hitler's rise and through the second world war. Characters are deftly drawn, and the author skillfully pulls the reader through the book. This is an exceptional read for everyone, chronicling the lives of an ordinary family in desperate times.

While I appreciate the author's attempt at melding a chick lit scenario with the harsh realities of coping with cancer, I wasn't charmed enough by the heroine to invest her recovery or indeed her journey. I felt that the author had stretched my sympathies too far asking me to care about her recovery, her relationship with her mother, her devotion to her career, as well as the men she found her self drawn back to. I abhor that all female writers of a certain age are classified as chick lit, and wanted this book to be different. More on a commentary of the harsh realities of a young woman coping with the realities going through recovery on her own, versus trying to find meaning in her life by digging through her little black book and obsessing over her ob/gyn or her exboyfriend.

First off I want to review the cover. The cover on the first book, Fallen, was the thing that made me by that book in the first place. “Torment’s” cover is just as unique. The cover captures the feeling of the book, it tells you about the frustration you will fall during reading and it also represent the frustration and desperation Luce feels through the whole book. The cover is in grey-style, there isn’t colours. I guess we can see the beach of Shoreline, the school Luce have to stay at for 18 days. Even though Shoreline is a colourful and sunny place the cover fits, because it shows Luce’s lack of interest in being at the school and it portrays her feeling of loneliness even in a crowd. “Torment” is a good read and I think it’s well written, a few times it can be a predictable. For a while before the fast-pace at the end my head was screaming: “Oh, some on Luce! You should see this, you should know!” In the end I think this is a good and entertaining book. As and overall I think this book builds up in the end enough to make you want to read more. But I don’t think that “Torment” leaves enough tension to make me thirst for the third book, but it leaves me satisfied enough that I’ll wait patiently for it. I think the development of the characters might will pace down a little in the third book and make them more realistic (they developed a bit too fast in Torment). Read the complete review on my blog
LOVED this book. It is so rich and works on so many layers. It really is a postmodern alogory of world religion. Pi falls in love with Hinduism, Catholicism, and Islam. He studies these religions out of love for God and wanting to know more about God. Then he both physically and metaphorically goes on a journey to understand the complexities of human nature and God. A wonderful read. I see this book being read in every high school in 20 years.
