This fall I found text files of the entire Ender series that my brother had left on my computer, and proceeded to drop out of the universe for a couple of weeks to re-read them. It culminated in my telling my roommate I was going to class and instead sneaking down the hall to read for several more hours without facing her judgement.

Really interesting. Set in Soviet Russia under Stalin, the main character is a Soviet police officer who really believes in what he is doing... until he starts to question it. Part murder mystery, part love story, mostly it is a tale of redemption. It took me a little while to get into it, but once I was, it was tough to put down.

LOVED it! It was the perfectly read-aloud book to share with the kids. I can't wait to start the next one in the series.

This is one of my all time favorite books. It is actually a trilogy printed in three separate books. It was a Nobel Prize winner in 1936 I think. Whatever you do, don't read any recent versions. The new translation is not nearly as good as the old translation!
I had no idea what I'd think about this book as I picked it up, but I ended up really liking the historical fiction aspect. In fact, I kind of now want to actually read some of Hemingway's work to determine what influences his life with his first wife may have had on his writing style. A first for me, as I typically don't have much interest in picking up tried and true classics.

This book started out a bit strange, I felt..and I am not sure that I ever really came to actually like or sympathize with the heroine. It is not a book that grabs you, that's for sure. That said, I may still check out the second book in the series..we'll see. Probably won't spend a lot of money on it, though! :-)

The thing I love about David Levithan is that he writes about how he would like the world to be, not about how awful the world IS. It wasn't quite as beautifully written as Boy Meets Boy, I thought, but it did almost make me cry at the end.

Overall very readable. I particularly liked the moments when he connected the rise of different sound technologies to certain world situations and their consequences.
This was a fascinating read. I highly recommend it.
history, economics, geography, culture, personal anecdotes, pleasure. . .this book has it all.
