I have read the taught this book so many times now and every time I do I find something new and wonderful about it. It is of course, a great way to study mid-century American religious history, which is why I teach it, but my secret is that I include it in my classes because I like reading it again and again. Day's commitment to social justice and self sacrifice is obviously inspirational and particularly relevant at the moment, but her articulation of her religious struggles is what keeps me devoted to this text. Even though as a Jew, I can't really relate to her Christ-centered worldview, her writing has so much to offer anyone who has ever wrestled with what God demands of us, and with what we, in turn, demand from Her/Him.

I approached this, my second reading of these short stories, with some trepidation. I still recalled, even years later, how shocked I was to encounter the murderous Misfit in the title story when I was expecting instead some nice Southern stories with quirky characters and down-home charm. O'Connor breaks this mold thoroughly, and creates her own with violence and misfortune exaggerated to an almost comic degree. But I am not a fan of black comedy, so I find I can't rate this as highly as the clever writing and unique style might otherwise warrant. Still there are some insights to be gained within, some of which only came to me days later out of the blue. Maybe best read in small doses, so you aren't worn down by the bleak lives of the characters as they head towards their inevitable hopeless dead-ends.
Don't bother.

Good battles (+ glad to see the end of a certain Akatsuki member...). Introduction of an intriguing character. Revisits older characters. All in all, good stuff.

If I could, I'd shoot Max. Well, I wouldn't really. But not just becsuse I'd be killed viciously by Fang, Dylan and the rest of the Flock or because she'd probably kill me first. Or because she is a fictional character. I wouldn't because she's just Max and is therefore amazing BUT I do feel like having a good sit down with Mr Patterson himself to convince him to rethink where the story is going. But I still loved it. Like you have to.

I absolutely loved this book!!!!! This book had a great story line and amazing detail. I really enjoyed reading this book for many reasons, one of them being the characters were amazing. My favorite character in this book was Shug herself. When I was in the middle of this book I thought I knew how the book was going to end. But then when I finished this book, the ending was different then what I had predicted. Personally, I was very satisfied with the ending of this book. Overall, This is my favorite book to date.

This is a book to savor. I withheld that fourth star because of the format--the maps beg to be placed side-by-side with the text that describes them, but instead they each take up a complete tall and skinny spread. That said, I do believe Solnit is a compelling writer.
