i'm a fan of rollins and have read all but one ( i think) of his adult novels. this one was for kids/teens or tweens, but was still worth reading. it was sort of "rollins-lite". there were some interesting concepts introduced and the wild sci-fi was typical of rollins. the dialogue was young and geared to kids. i had this feeling that the main character - an 8th grader- seemed younger than that at times. who knows? i'm not around kids much. it's a very fast read and likely the first of a series. i'll keep reading them as they come out, but look forward to his next adult novel.

Good early writing by Col. Peters. It got me started reading most of his work.

fallen in to the pile of 4star books... i wish they had decimals b/c it's more like 4.8 (i don't like to give 5). read it slowly in small bits to prevent what he says from becoming bitter aphorisms, and more like sharp shards of truth that need time to sink in. he's like the intense, depressing friend who's hard to take in large doses, but he's that way because he has a very clear look at the world around him. we need people like him.

Ned is actually a good friend of mine - we briefly dated when I was a sophomore in college and we've remained friends (the book is dedicated in-part to me, in fact) - but I swear to God, I'd love Be More Chill even if I'd pulled it off a shelf. I really can't put it down; it's refreshing to read a young adult novel that's a quick read, but still a thought-provoking, laugh-out-loud funny one. His writing is so readable and fluid and his characters could walk off the page and fit in at any high school in America. Why didn't they give us books like this to read in high school? It's weird for me to read this book because the main character, Jeremy, I really think is based on Ned. Jeremy says things about himself that I have heard Ned Vizzini talk about or seen him do. Of course, the book is a little bit sci-fi, so heaps of it are made up, but this book is a quite memoir-eque fictional novel in that it seems to be how Ned has worked out his high school dorkiness and confusion and angst about not getting with girls. Good job, Ned. Sorry it took me two/three years to finally read it.

NOT SO AWESOME? As triologies come and go, Catching Fire is not that bad for a middle book. Some authors simply fill in their second book of the series with utter crap just to lead up to the final saga. In fact this one is pretty good but just not up to my expectations. That is pretty much becuase i was practically obsessing over The Hunger Games. It was goddamn awesome and was as if it was written for a reader like me. One who likes gore, romance, violence, sentiment, politics and dytopia all packed into one. However, in Catching Fire somethings just started to irritate the shit out me. Example.... 1. okay, i freaking get it about the mood in district 12 but does it really have to be dragged for over a 150 pages? The starting is slow and i was starting to wonder when they would ever get to the heart of it. [which is pretty much much later in the book] 2. The whole I-will-just-kiss-Peeta-over-and-over-to-convince-the-loser-President-Snow-and-the-Capitol was just bullcrap. How long really? If i was in the Capitol, i would just start my own uprising against Katniss. Has kissing become such a cheap thing? She is just 17 and dumbass President Snow is trying to get her married without her mother's consent? WHO IS HE? HER FREAKING DAD? 3."what the freaking crap was that?!?" was my exact reaction when Peeta announces about Katniss being pregnant. You are freaking 17 and you get a girl pregnant. Teenage pregnancy is nothing to be proud of you know. And you still expect to gain sympathy from the captiol for your sorry ass? you can just kiss mine.[sorry folks, i was really agitated at the 'baby' thing. 4. Lastly, the ending. i had to read it twice to get it around my head. Too much things were told in small paragraphs. i had trouble understanding how and why the Quarter Quell ended so abruptly when the force field was blown up and so little was explained by haymitch. it was huh? all the way till the last line. it was as if Collins had to end the story as quickly as she can, without explaining anything so that she can go to the toilet or something. 5. Okay maybe that one was not really the last point, but i really had to add this. What is the difference between Gale and Peeta? Peeta can paint, and Gale cannot? is that it?. and really, Peeta must a freaking saint TO LET KATNISS KISS HIM, SLEEP WITH HIM AND ACT LIKE GALE IS NO MORE WHEN SHE KEEPS GOING BACK TO GALE? Other than that, i absolutely love this book. The clock work arena was just insanely smart and incredibly scary. i am now pressing my three middle fingers of my left hand over my lips and extending them towards the computer. tata!

Unusual. Liked it...made me reflect on how being a teacher gets you involved in others lives, for the good and the bad that that brings.
