"An Epic Novel of Japan" the cover boasts--and perhaps it is, although it serves better as a set up to its sequel than anything else. Still, there are some great moments in here, and the interpretation of Japan that is built upon in this novel is good. The fanstasy elements, while too sparse to qualify the novel for any such genre label, enhance the characters of the story and don't dissuade the reader too much from the historical backrgound. It is only near the end, though, that the author's brilliance is first revealed--a power that is brought into full bearing in the sequel.

The second in the series, Silent in the Sanctuary continues with the themes started in the first book, Silent in the Grave. I am still admiring Raybourn for her ability to show us a multi-layered image of the Victorian era (something many steampunk books could learn from her!), and the deft way in which she mixes the funny with the sad, never crossing over to shallow whimsy, which happens with so many mystery series. The reasons why this book got a lower grade are, first, the fact that Julia's character was less interesting than in the first one, and second, the mystery itself, which felt a little overcomplicated. Still, a very enjoyable read and a good continuation of the series. Looking forward to the next two. (Yes, I'm on a roll here. So sue me.)

For me to not even finish a book, that is an extremely rare occurrence. I almost always power through a book even if it makes me sick to my stomach; I hate to say I quit anything before I really gave it a shot. With Angel Burn, I found I just couldn't swallow anything the author had to say no matter how hard I tried. My biggest issue, was the idea behind the book. As a devote Christian, I am certain of that which I believe in. Very few things from my faith bleed over, however, into what I choose to read or not read. Angel Burn was one of the first exceptions I have ever discovered. I have never minded reading about angels (fallen or otherwise) but in this book I was struck by how much Weatherly's "angels" reminded me of soul-sucking demons. Humans were swathed in ignorance while the angels fed off of them and ultimately crippled them. It was a despicable method for portraying those I believe to be God's servants. Add in a psychic half-breed human/angel and a chakra-centering angel hunter and you are left with an annoyingly predictable forbidden love scenario. All in all, I was disappointed and strangely disturbed with/by what I read. I don't plan on reading any more of the author's works for fear of what they might include. Such a shame, the title and cover were so promising! I guess it's true what they say though: you can't judge a book by its cover. Note: I recieved this book as a galley from Candlewick Press on Netgalley. My original review is available on my profile there as well as on my blog: Penny for Your Pages
The movies of the original Star Wars trilogy (Episodes 4-6) are some of my favorite movies, so I decided to try the novelization. These books are very close to the movies, but some of the dialogue is different, and there are a few additional scenes in the book. Star Wars All 3 novels in this book are based on George Lucas' movie scripts, but this is the only one actually authored by him. There are a couple scenes of Luke with Biggs Darklighter and other friends on Tatooine that weren't in the movie, but it didn't add much to the storyline other than some more background on Luke. The Empire Strikes Back This was always my favorite Star Wars movie. I can't think of anything that stood out about the novelization. Return of the Jedi I like James Kahn's writing style best. The vocabulary was better, and he spent more time showing what the characters were thinking. This novel explains more than the movie about Obi-Wan's history, how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader, how Senator Palpatine became the Emperor, how Leia came to become part of the Alderaan royal family, and how the Rebels recruited the Ewoks' help on Endor. Yoda also speaks more in the novel than the movie. Kahn did have an annoying habit of trying to spell out certain sounds like R2-D2's beeping, Chewbacca's alien growling, and the Ewoks' language. I didn't get through this book very fast, mostly because I already knew the story so I wasn't motivated to read it. However, it did provide some valuable background information that the movies don't contain, so it was worth reading.

Interesante é coñecer a visión tan reaccionaria dun señor da idade de Stéphane Hessel e comprobar que mantén intacto o espírito de loita (e de clases). Moi boa traducción. Libro rápido de ler e de dixestión lenta.
