This is the book that launched my love affair with Hermon Wouk. There was something about this story of a Jew who straddled the line between Judaism and not being very religious that I think probably speaks to a lot of Jews who are struggling with the guilt of assimilation.

From my 8th grade assignment up to now still one of my favorites. I like the passage where Mr. Lockwood hears a branch tapping on the window pane so he busts the glass "and stretching an arm out to seize the importunate branch: instead of which, my fingers closed on the fingers of an ice cold hand" and then "terror mad me cruel; and, finding it useless to attempt shaking the creature off, I pulled its writst on to the broken pane, and rubbed it to and fro till the blood ran down and soaked the bed-clothes: still it wailed, 'let me in!'" Let me in, indeed-creepy. (But -alas- it's not real)

Could there be any better pairing than Mem Fox and Steve Jenkins?!? Jenkins' cut-paper collages make this book a great introduction for babies to realistic (but basic) animal illustrations that reveal something about what makes that animal unique. As usual, Fox's rhymes are never far-fetched or forced, but resonate with the reader because of their amazingly simplistic originality. You've read countless books about baby animals, but you've not read Hello Baby!
