I read the book before I saw the movie, and the book was better, by far.

i pictured heathcliff as an orange cat with a lot of street smarts and a way with the females (yes, i am immature. so).
Entertaining with interesting themes, but I'm not sure what all the rapturous hoopla is about.

This story starts right off in the head of the main character Brie. It’s a bit like working backwards at first, then the reader catches up to where Brie is in her own story and we ride it out with her. Since I wasn’t invested in the character yet, the first few chapters were not that interesting to me. Once the reader catches up to Brie and Patrick enters the picture, the book gets on a roll. The concept of the main character being dead and working her way through the stages of grief sounds depressing. However, this book is anything but. Each stage of grief brings about new revelations for Brie. Even though this is a fiction book, the events that unfold reminded me people’s lives are not always what we think they are. Everyone has secrets or things they didn’t know. Brie gets to see these hidden things from her life in the afterlife. All these things you think lead her to accept she’s dead. But that’s not the end goal. The book takes a twist that makes this book a much more romantic read than I originally expected. The two main characters, Brie and Patrick, end up quite likable. At first, Brie acts like the teenager she is, but by the end of the book I quite liked her. Patrick is a great guide in the afterlife and helps Brie through her stages of grief. There are complications in the story that add to the intrigue of what is really going on in Brie’s former life and current afterlife. Rothenberg does a nice job of interweaving these two aspects carrying the reader to the same conclusion Brie eventually comes to. The ending wraps up well except I do have one nagging thought. Brie does something in the end that leaves me to question her and Patrick’s ‘status’. This is a stand alone novel, so my main complaint is that not all was firmly explained to my satisfaction. In a stand alone I don’t like being left with any questions. Other than that, I enjoyed the book.

I like this series. I hope they do more (but maybe they're running out of material). It's all been done a million times before, but what hasn't been done to this extent is the fabulous photos and illustrations that accompany the text (which is very good). I read everything I can get my hands on about the Romans, and there was nothing in this book that raised any red flags of shoddy work. I now badly want to read a book on Caracalla and Geta. So thanks! My already boundless interest has been further whetted!

I fought through the first 80 pages or so of this book. There were so many characters, and there was so many facts about their histories for the reader to absorb; these things made it hard for me to immediately sink into the story. It was a difficult beginning. However, once I got a good handle on the specifics, the story engrossed me. I stayed up until 6:30 AM (no, I haven't started working fulltime yet) reading it. Anyhow, the action and character development was brilliantly resolved: brutal, frank, devastating. I wish I had taken advantage of his A2 visit and talked to him (even though I heard he was reserved and a little hard to communicate with) rather than sneaking into his Cottage Inn dinner and gorging myself on pizza.

My mum would read this to me as I was going to sleep at night. When she would finish a chapter for the night, she would put the book on top of the wardrobe. After she left the room, I would get up and read another chapter becaus I could'nt wait to know what happened next. Aahh the memories.
An all time favorite.

I started out reading and was sure that Modesitt had a problem with words. It was as if he were writing with a thesaurus open beside his writing pad (or computer keyboard). It seemed that any time he was ready to write a common word, he seemed to use the most odd choice available in the thesaurus. I complained to my wife. She suffers from my steady comments about books, no matter whether I'm gushing praise or heaping scorn. Well, it turns out that the excess in verbiage was a character's flaw. Another person in the book complained about it. After realizing I wasn't in for thesaurus thrall, I began to relax and also began to get into the story. Some artifact has been found and one political group of the several human cultures, the Comity, wants to explore it. The deeply religious cultures don't want the artifact to be explored or exploited, especially if it makes the Comity stronger and them weaker. The many good characters carry this space opera forward effectively, and the battles don't overpower the thoughtful consideration of humanity divided against itself even though no longer confined to the single home world of Earth.
