Bobby realizes at a very young age that he is different from the other boys. As he grows older, he begins to experiment with sex and realizes that he is, in fact, gay. Unfortunately, his Mother, who is very religious believes that Bobby's "affliction" is caused by the Devil and that he is being lured into this lifestyle and that God will heal him. Although Mary continues to believe that God can heal all, Bobby's other siblings have learned to accept Bobby for who he is and try to support him but at this point Bobby is frustrated and confused and not sure what to think. He believes himself to be evil and ugly and notes this in the journal that he keeps. After Bobby commits suicide, Mary begins to read his journals and it's only then that she realizes her mistake. Bobby was not "healable" because there was nothing wrong with him to begin with. After this revelation she goes on a mission to save other kids like Bobby and through her efforts, many congregations begin to incorporate gay references into its liturgy. I had to stop reading this a few times because the subject matter was very depressing. As a mother, I cannot even imagine what Mary went through when she realized her mistake. I mean, this is a true story and Bobby's journal entries are so wrought with pain that it just tugs at your heart. However, towards the end of the book, I felt as if it fell out of balance a bit. The last third of the book focuses on Mary's cause and getting the church to acknowledge gays and lesbians. This was a bit tedious for me and I skimmed a lot of it. Overall, this isn't really a book you'd pick up on your own. My book club selected this book for June and we are discussing it this Thursday so I am looking forward to seeing what issues are discussed and "how" they are discussed because of the touchy subject matter (homosexuality, religion, suicide). Lifetime aired a movie version based on the book. The trailer for it looks pretty good but I haven't seen the movie yet.

This book is awesome. It basically takes place in two different time periods, and the protagonist has to solve a crucial problem within both. A crazy adventure and a must read!

I really love Chasing Inspiration--it's really true for me, too! And like I've said before, I love the Spider Memories one and the part in Night Terror about the ivy getting "a foothold on another brick." Very funny. A lot of them are sad or poignant, but still really pretty--especially the last one, "I'm Still Your Child." I liked the bit in "Visiting Ghosts and Grounds" where the speaker goes to her father's shed, not his casket, to find his ghost and closure. I also liked "Water Skeeters"--I wonder a lot about what parts of my childhood I'll end up sharing with my kids, when I have them far in the future. Ok, actually I liked all of them, so I'm going to stop extolling each individual one here and say that the collection as a whole and as individual poems is really awesome. Write some more, Stacy!

I re-read Saving Francesca before I read this book because I had forgotten a lot about this particular group of friends and their relationships. Tom was slightly wounded when he met Francesca in the first book, but five years later he is teetering on the brink of destruction. The book is told from both Tom's and his Aunt Georgie's point of view in alternating chapters. Tom's entire family was shattered when his uncle was blown up by a bomb on the London Tube. Tom's mom has taken his sister to live in another city, and Tom's father has succumbed to alcoholism and grief. Tom has recently lost a year of his life to drugs and alcohol after his parents separated. Without a loving and stable family, Tom is floundering and finally turns to his pregnant, unmarried Aunt Georgie for a room to stay in. He goes to work at the Union Pub and gets reluctantly re-involved with Francesca and his former group of friends. This story is very realistic and poignant and I loved how there was hope for both Tom's family and a relationship between Tom and Tara. I will read anything that Ms. Marchetta writes!

Very Tender.
This is a novel written in the first person, from the perspective of an old woman named Hagar. It's basically a retrospective on her life, complete with detailed descriptions of her miserable husband, her miserable children and children-in-law, untimely death, divorce, bodily noises, etc. The book was written in the early 1960's. I really wanted to like this book, however I found the main character very unlikable, unfortunately (probably obvious from the description I gave above). I generally like to keep books and re-read them, but this one is not a keeper. It's back to the Good Will for you, Stone Angel! So sorry.
