The writing is great. The descriptions of the Salinas Valley are fantastic, of course. Steinbeck's talent for bringing the valley to life through his descriptions of the flora are not exaggerated. People saying that the story has a Biblical undertone slightly annoys me, because the Biblical connection to the story is decidedly unsubtle. While the connection is not made painfully obvious, I do think I would have enjoyed the book better if the connections the book made with the Bible were more subtle. The characters are rather good, with most of them being portrayed as fully-fleshed out complete people. I believe my only problem with the portrayal in characters in the novel stems from a difference of moral philosophies between myself and Steinbeck. I think that Steinbeck portrays a morally correct path throughout the book, despite displaying the reasoning for all of his character's actions well. He lays out what is done and why, while also laying out a proper path that ought to be taken. I was bugged at times by that occurrence in the writing, and thought it took away from the strength of the characters. Despite having himself in the story through tracing his lineage, I think that Steinbeck has another surrogate for himself in the book: Lee. In my opinion, Steinbeck occasionally uses Lee to teach his own point of view on something. A lot of my issues with the book did not stem from the book at all, but from the recommendations of others regarding this book. This book is absolutely a fine piece of work. Before I read this book, I read reviews calling the book subtle, and a fine lesson in empathy. In my opinion, it was more transparent, and the book certainly has favorite characters. The writing is fantastic, the characters are far better than most books. There are real things this book has to teach about people. It's such a fine work, I think I'm better for having read it, and it's left a strong impression on me.

Everyone I've talked to about this book has loved it, and it's always been on my "I've been meaning to read this" list. I even remember seeing it featured on Wishbone. haha.

I liked this book. Justin Kinmurrie, Duke of Kylemore has a 1 year contract with his mistress he knows as Soraya (a contract that took several years for him to get). Little does he know that she only waits to escape from her life that she has been forced to endure after the contract is up, and she disappears on the date the contract expires. He does not know her real name, nor much about her and spends months tracking her down. When he finds her, he kidnaps her and forces her to go with him to his Scotish mountain lodge...a home that he has horrible memories of. While there, they both must face the demons that haunt them. I like a strong hero and also a woman that is stong enough to go after what she wants. This is a very good story and I would recommend it. Hot sex scenes too!!!

Occasionally you do feel a bit sorry for the people Ms. Truss criticizes in this book. But on the other hand, if you're the type of person who wants to go ballistic when you see a grocery sign reading "Fresh Banana's," then this book is for you! Apart from listing the egregious errors that are most common in grammar these days, the section on commas and other punctuation is wonderful. A person who is unsure of the correct way of using the comma, and some other marks like the apostrophe, could use that section of the book as a reference. Truss makes the proper usage very clear. So all in all, an excellent, amusing book.

Very entertaining memoir detailing the painful, yet fascinating details of Jeannette Wall's life in drastically different cultures throughout her childhood and the fight she makes to create a better life for herself. Definitely recommend!

My only complaint with this book is the lack of color plates. Who writes a book about clouds and includes only black and white illustrations!?

This book had a lot of potential but it never got there! There is a whole section about a new minister that never culminated into anything, and I wondered why this part of the book even existed. It seemed as though the book was finished quickly, and not at all completely. Very dissapointing.
