1977 Caldecott Medal Winner An alphabet book in which an African tribe is assigned to each letter with an interesting fact about the tribe and an illustration to represent them. The t.p. verso includes some info about the art, which was "prepared in pastels, watercolors, and acrylics. The frames that surround each picture were done in watercolor and black ink. The interwoven design at the corners of each frame is based on the Kano Knot, which symbolizes endless searching--a design originally used in the then-flourishing city of Kano in northern Nigeria during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries." These illustrations are quite striking. They use a lot of brown, orange, yellow, and green, and seem like very well-composed representations of the various tribes. Probably the most interesting traditions to me are those that are least similar to my own culture. For example, among the Masai, the men wear their hair in long braids while the women go bald. The Ndaka "wrap a bride in so much cloth that no one knows how big she is." Also, with our current-day interest in the Muslim world, I thought it very fascinating that the men of the Tuareg (who have some Muslim beliefs according to Wikipedia) go veiled and at parties ("ahal") listen to the unveiled female storytellers and poets. Their society is matrilineal and taking on the veil is a sign of the transition to manhood. Wild! The back of the book includes a map that generally shows where each of the tribes in the book lives.
