This was ok. The idea is very interesting, and since it is the first of a series, I wouldn't mind seeing where the story goes. Not very deep or thought provoking, but not bad for a few days reading.

This was a gift from a friend during a difficult time in life. I need to buy another copy because I've paid mine forward. I just finished re-reading this book. Of course I received more from it this time. As with all great teaching — this is meant to be visited and re-visited when needed. These writings are really a series of lectures Pema made over the course of some years. Since Goodreads didn't exist when I read this the first time, I didn't record any quotes or lessons. I will write a few here: "The spiritual journey is not about heaven and finally getting to a place that is really swell. In fact, that way of looking at things is what keeps us miserable. Thinking that we can find some lasting pleasure and avoid pain is what in Buddhism is called samsara, a hopeless cycle that goes round and round enedlessly and causes us to suffer greatly." "Most of us do not take thse situations as teachers. We automatically hate them. We run llke crazy. We use all kinds of ways to escape — all addications stem from this moment when we meet our edge and we just can't stand it. We feel we have to soften it, pad it with something, and we become addicted to whatever it is that seems to ease the pain." "Honesty without kindness, humor, and goodheartedness can be just mean. From the very beginning to the very end, pointing to our own hearts to discover what is true isn't just a matter of honesty but also of compassion and respect for what we see."

I saw this on someone else's list and decided that skimming it in preparation for a quiz in 9th grade wasn't really going to cut it. So I picked it up from the library this morning. UPDATE: Just finished this book and I think it's worth at least two reads if not more.

I must admit I find Dan Brown's books quite intense to read,however, once I get through them I do find them enjoyable. I especially enjoy the clues hidden within this storyline and the race against time to save the Catholic Church. I watched the movie after I read the book and the characters were as I imagined them. A good read.

I first found out about this novel because I watched the '80's tv mini series with my mom (she thought it was something I would enjoy, naturally she was correct). There are more characters and the book details situations more thoroughly than showed in the mini series, to be expected. It's a bitter sweet and beautiful saga over the course of 3 generations, focusing mostly on the middle generation with Meggie O'Neill (nee Cleary) and her confusing love/relationship with Catholic priest Ralph.

Ok, yes, we were forced to read it in sophomore english, but I liked it. A very good war novel! And I usually don't like them, so that saying something. Oh, the scene with the horses... you can really hear them and see them in the field. Creepy.
