I went into Twilight not knowing what to expect. I read it years after it was released and right before the first movie came out so I knew it was really popular. I figured it would be amazing so I went out and purchased all four of the books from Walmart one night and started my journey. I finished the entire series in less than a week. I couldn't put it down. There is something so transfixing to me about Edward's love and attentions that I couldn't wait to see what happened next. The writing style was absolutely terrible. It reminded me of a 13 year old's writing when in fact it was a grown woman. I'm not sure if maybe she did this on purpose to appeal to a younger audience but I have a suspicion that she just isn't that good of a writer. No matter, the story itself was so appealing to me emotionally that the style of writing only bothered me from time to time. I have always had a secret love of vampirism ever since I was young and read most all of Anne Rice's books and the book Companions of the Night, so I was easily taken in by this obsessive love story. If I were to analyze it like most Twilight haters do, I would have to agree that Edward is a creepy, pedophilic, old stalker. This story wasn't written to be logical though, and I think it's beautiful in its own way. My rating is for the first book by itself, as I have other opinions of the rest. I wish you could give half stars because the writing really deserves a dock of one and a half stars to me.

I am always amazed at how much folk wisdom Terry Pratchett can cram into a book, in this case even just the first couple of chapters. If you have not had the good fortune to read his Tiffany Aching series, do yourself a favor and rush out right now and get The Wee Free Men (Tiffany Aching, #1). Don't hesitate because it is marketed as a Young Adult book, for you are only depriving yourself of a great literary treat. I Shall Wear Midnight (Tiffany Aching, #4) is, in some ways, not quite as satisfying as its predecessors, because Tiffany is growing well into her role as the witch for the Chalk region and so there aren't quite as many discoveries for her to make (and us along with her). Nevertheless, she is a lovely character to know and a knowing character to love. I will definitely be re-reading this book someday.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway! I had never read any of Jacqueline Winspear's previous books, so was excited to delve into a new author and series. Even though this was book #8 in the series, it was easy to understand and become attached to the characters, without having read the previous books. I look forward to going back and reading the first 7 books of the series to have a deeper understanding of Maisie and some of the references in this book. This book takes place in 1932, between WWI and WWII. The threat of war is not eminent, but you feel the winds of change beginning. Maisie accepts an undercover assignment as a junior professor at a private college in Cambridge, while still maintaining her own investigation business in London. She is a refreshing, self sufficient professional woman who brings intelligence and thoughtfulness to the story. I enjoyed the fact that the author depicts her life on multiple levels, not just in her role as Secret Service Agent, making Maisie a more likable and realistic character. Would definitely recommend this book and series to anyone who enjoys history, mysteries, and a strong woman lead character.

At 19, Eddie has successfully avoided getting involved in gangs in his hometown of Fresno, although many of his old friends and family members have not. He's mourning his cousin and deflecting his aunt, who wants Eddie to avenge his cousin's murder. Eddie's also trying to make a living and realize the American Dream, although he's beginning to think that's just a fairy tale people tell their kids. He's finding that no matter how straight he tries to live, Fresno's environment will always drag him into trouble. I really feel terrible for him. Gary Soto writes beautifully, with figurative language and especially with metaphors and similes that make readers completely understand what he is describing. (The first paragraph of chapter 3 is my favorite.) That being said, his language may be difficult to access for the readers who will be drawn to this 150-page book: Latino boys who prefer action over description. Although these is some action and struggle, I don't think it's enough to hold most of my students' attention, since most of it is later in the book, and the students have to wade through the first few chapters first.

What can be better than the first Jane Marple mystery? Once again, I thought I had this one only to find (once again) I was sadly mistaken.
