This is a beautiful book written by a fashion editor from British Vogue. I picked it up while I was in London last year, thinking that it was going to be a light read about the fabulous clothes she wore, but boy was i wrong. It turned out to be about a woman's journey through life and relationships with the clothes in her closet triggering the memories and the adventures. This is a collection of essays, and each one ranges from sentimental to a ghost story. Don't get me wrong, The clothes she describes are fabulous, but so is this book.

Jack, an eleven year old boy, faces the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl with his downtrodden family. The illustrations are wonderful and social studies teachers will appreciate how Phelan captures the bleak landscape, and the hopeless families. The book includes some interesting mystical elements. While I found the book a not very fun read, I think that's exactly why it's a great graphic novel: it captures the difficultly of life in the Midwest during the Great Depression. I don't know that I would recommend this to students for reading for pleasure. I would definitely recommend it to teachers addressing the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, or agricultural life in the 1930s. Would make a good introduction for The Grapes of Wrath.

This book is about the situation that America would be in if no Constitution was ever established. It has so much truth in it, and really makes you think of what road America is really heading down right now.

This book is about the constant internal struggle of a very, perhaps tragically, ordinary man. It is a truly beautiful book about a man who is trying to figure out who he is during a time where people lives are often determined for them. I loved it.
I loved the book as it was about the Amish life! A widow(Lydia) and her son move back in with her mother and helps take care of her grandfather, when he dies and Lydia's son dies in an accident both mom and daughter find love again, but it takes awhile because they are both leery of finding love again, but all turns out well! Lydia ends up marrying a man who is in a family of dwarf's, but he is of regular size! Makes for an interesting story!
I thought the idea about the book was good: living within the lowest working class for a year and seeing where it got you. I simply had problems with the way that Ehrenreich went about it. For example, she started off with $1000 in order to make down payments, always had a car even though the most economical approach would have been public transportation or walking, and that after a month somewhere she got up and went someplace new. She didn't just change jobs, but locations, something that many people would not be able to do. I give her credit for doing what she did, but I cannot honestly say that she succeeded in what she was trying to accomplish. It was well-written, funny, and I think that it was an OK read... I just would have liked it better if it had been slightly more realistic. Although I know that it's hard to get much more realistic than she did.

Mosse is a good story-teller. The method of story-telling is much the same as Labyrinth and therefore has its moments of deja-vu but I've given this 4 stars because the story flowed and the book held me. Not a world-shattering masterpiece but a good read.
