Kara is a hot-shot investigative reporter who is struggling to balance her work with the upbringing of her son. Reece is a idealistic senator, who just wants to make the world of politics less corrupt. When they first meet in a bar, Kara has had one too many margarita's and catches Reece's attention with her loose lipped sexual questions (my favourite being "Do women really taste like tuna?). Reece is hooked immeidiately, and does everything that he can to woo the dubious reporter. In the land of work, Kara recieves a tip from a whistle-blower, telling her of illegal waste dumping by a big cement company. She begins to investigate, but immeidiately someone starts making her life a tad more difficult. She begins receiving phone-calls, her house is broken into and, ultimately, there are attempts on her life. Reece tries to help the best he can but she won't tell him anything about what she is working on, stating she has to protect her sources! Eventually he manages to discover what the case is that is causing all the hassle, unfortunately the more he involves himself in her problems, the worse the situation becomes for him too. Together they have to work out who the bad guys are to save Kara's life and Reeces repuation, which makes for a fantastic suspense novel with lots of sexual chemistry. This was a fantastic first novel and made me want to read more. I liked Kara, but Reece was a little too perfect for me (I prefer my hero's tortured and scarred :D) There were plenty of sparks between the two and the sex scenes were just yummy! The pace was amazing and there was plenty of humour to detract from the intensity of the danger and remind the reader that, ultimately, this is a romance. Best scene is the "purple jiggle stick" scene where Kara's little boy runs around the house with her vibrator, on the evening that Reece comes to pick her up for their first date! A fab book one!!!

Thirteen-year-old Mary Chilton has lived in Leyden, Holland almost her entire life; she was not yet three years old when her family fled England in search of religious freedom. But neither England nor Holland feels like her real home to Mary. She has always longed for a place to truly belong. When her parents decide to join other English Separatists living in Holland who are planning to settle in the New World, she feels a mixture of sorrow at leaving behind friends, neighbors, and her three adults sisters, and joy at the thought that she might finally find a place to call home. But the sea voyage on the Mayflower is long and dangerous, filled with storms and sickness, and the difficulties do not end when they finally reach the New World. Wendy Lawton has brought to life the story of Mary Chilton, a real girl who was a passenger on the Mayflower in 1620. I enjoyed this book, and I recommend it to readers who enjoy middle grade historical fiction, particularly those who have a special interest in the Pilgrims or Colonial America.

The book is a tad on the slow side, but you know from the beginning that there's a mystery, and the intrigue and curiosity get you through the slower moments. A young maid serving a wealthy English family during World War I, witnesses (along with the two daughters of the house) a suicide, and those three are the only ones who know what truly happened that night. The entirety of the novel is in flashbacks, as the then 98 year old woman recounts her memory of her years serving, and the secrets she knew.
good but not great. it was entertaining and i would recommend it but nothing stand out about it.

I am a bit mystified by the critical acclaim this book received. It's very compelling, albeit in a creepy, I-need-to-finish-this-so-I-don't-stay-awake-thinking-about-it kind of way, but both the voice of the narrator (he's 5, yet his syntax seemed more like that of a 3 year old) and the nature of the situation seemed a little sensationalistic (is that a word?). I don't recommend it. She's a talented writer, but this for me was just meh in the end.
A classic of travel literature. What I cannot emphasize enough is the level of absurdism that any contemporary modern day traveller will read into Byron's actions while exploring the middle east. The hilarity of his interactions with his own British compatriots and those native to the countries in which he imposed himself is what drew me in to this narrative. I tended to skim the architectural bits.

The one where Nurk, the shrew, opens a letter that's meant for his grandmother, Surka the warrior hero, and thus is forced to set off on an adventure of his own, guided only by her journal. This is a charming kids' book. The art is at least a third of the pleasure, and Surka's badly spelled, fearless journal is another third. The tone is great, mildly skeptical without being openly sarcastic. (For instance, once Nurk gets his snail-shell boat out into mid-river, he notes that it's going faster than he's ever seen it go, and then, remembering that its former owner was a snail, he decides it's going faster than it's ever gone.) I do kind of feel that the book could have made better use of the fact that it's almost entirely populated by creatures smaller than my hand. This "river," for instance -- if it's more than a little trickle, then it ought to look like the ocean to a shrew; none of the land-dwelling creatures his own size would ever have seen the other side of it. I wish the landscape had been more alien.

Being that I am a psychology major I obviously need to examine all of the schools of thought out there. Freud being the "father" of psychoanalysis this book is interesting to read. It has many of his case studies and his papers, some that are less well known than his later essay Civilization and Its Discontent. I am looking forward to reading it, most likely in parts because it is so much to take in.
