I really enjoyed listening to this book. It was good for a mystery/thriller type. I think it was a little better than the first Baldacci book, Absolute Power because it was more compact and it got to the point more quickly. Where I thought the book went wrong was at the ending... maybe the last 1/4th or so. I think that the plot resolution, as you finally find out about it at the end, is too convoluted and fantastical. However, as I said, it WAS very readable and I really was compelled to see how it did end. I am also getting a little sick of these mystery/thriller books, after reading 2 by Baldacci in fairly close succession. SO, I will pick something totally different next!

Seeing a Star Wars movie on the Spike channel a week ago gave me the appetite to read this book. Like a hamburger from Burger King or some other fast food joint, this book hit the spot even though it lacked nutrition and quality.....I am, however, not sorry for it :)

This book was fascinatingly written--from the perspective of a 5th grade girl with Asperger's (sp?) who has experienced her mother's death and her older brother's murder. It was interesting to watch how this young girl who struggles so much with emotion, brings emotional healing to so many people. It was hard to put down.
Fantastic read!! Loved every minute of it and hated for the book to end.

I picked this one up at a local used bookstore awhile ago and tried to read it but just couldn't get into it. Then, I saw a few goodreads friends had read it and enjoyed it so I decided to give it another chance. And, I'm soooo glad that I did. I think I just wasn't in the right place to read it earlier. But, this read was wonderful! I really enjoyed the book - the writing alone is outstanding. I was amazed at the luscious writing ... the descriptions of time and place were just amazingly well written. The author was able to describe the place in a way that just made me feel that I was there, experiencing every single, beautiful word. And, then, by putting that beautiful place up against the brutal and ugly world of slavery, McBride was able bring that time in our history alive for me. The story is focused on the complexities of slavery - the system, the brutality. And it really brings all of it to life. And I was glad that McBride seemed to bring to focus the fact that no one was able to break the chains of the system - white or black. This was not a book focused on the evil of the white man - it was focused on the evil of SLAVERY itself. No blame really - just a exploration of the system and its complexities. That was quite refreshing and gave me a different perspective that usually seen in books about this time in history. One element that I really found interesting was how McBride gave the reader a view modern-day African American society through the eyes of a slave. Those passages were fascinating to me. Those visions haunted me and gave me so much to think about. I really enjoyed this book - very compelling and interesting. I definitely recommend it!
I like this one ok...not a fav though.

The Devil in the White City was fascinating, juxtaposing a serial killer against the architects of one of the most contentious and technologically advanced (for its time) events in American history. This book, while just as well written, fell flat from a story perspective. I suppose the juxtaposition of the rise of Hitler and the atrocities of the Nazi regime could be interesting against a fuddy-duddy ambassador and his slutty daughter, but I found myself enduring the endless narrative on Dodd and longing for more Nazi history. This book was like being at a great party but stuck with the chatty couple who want to tell you all about their kids while the cool group are on the other side of the room having a spirited and animated conversation, doing body shots, and planning to move on to a night club.
Not as good as prep.

A lot of clever, silly writing, with well developed characters, make this book a fun and interesting read. The adventures, while interesting, were not as suspenseful as they could have been, and that is my only dislike of the book. But aside from suspense, the book was fun and interesting and I'm anxious to read the next one!
