3.5 stars. I liked it enough that I will continue to read the rest of the series. It was a bit slow, but very interesting learning about the amish.

It's flufftastic, but whatever, sometimes I want flufftastic.

I have become somewhat skeptical--even jaded--about the memoir genre in recent years, so I only read this based on a friend's recommendation. This one got me. I think the main appeal to me was that Karr looks back on some colossal screw-ups and rather than falling into maudlin sentimentality, she reflects on them thoughtfully. This is on one level a memoir about alcoholism, but it's also about one writer's life, which ultimately fascinated me.

I generally like the series, but I felt this was the weakest collection so far. It had the most thematic continuity, and I think the quality of the works included suffered as a result. It's cool that they are including more media, but come on...the screenwriting selection was "Me, You, and Everyone We Know"? Was it included in spite of or because of the fact that most of the readers had probably already seen and discussed the movie at length? How about something a little more off the radar? Some of the stories were cheesily sentimental, others tedious and predictable in a different way. The Katrina essay was excellent, and I really liked the unabashed gushing about Dubai in "The New Mecca." The "Lesson in Creative Writing" was pleasant though a little self-aware, especially considering its precious placement at the "almost end" of the book. All in all, I'd say it's a good read, but if you've never read any other "Nonrequireds," start someplace else.

A little back on form but still pretty formulaic writing. If you are a fan of Cussler, or if you have never read any of his other books in the Dirk Pitt series, then this is an okay read.

I read this upon a recommendation from a librarian at a high school. This was required reading for them! I will require my half Chinese, half Japanese teenage son to read this book in hopes that he will understand why labeling others is wrong even when your a minority yourself!

In terms of songwriting the Beatles were the greatest band on the planet ever. Reading their story in their own words proves they were bigger than jeebus.

I liked the suspenseful back and forth both in time and between Clare and Henry. The ending was not obvious until very near the end, which I really appreciated as after staying with it for so long.
