I was a little disappointed that the best short story was placed at the very beginning. I did like the story plot of Mrs. Clark and her daughter. Perhaps i was a little put off because it was hard to imagine that two weeks into captivity the group would harm themselves in such ways. Or I'm being overly critical because I loved all the other Chuck books so much that I had high expectations for this one, too. Overall, read this book while on a diet or nowhere near meal times because it will rid you of any desire to eat... for days!

This book is a little different from Jodi Picoult's other books. It has a running comic strip throughout the book because one of the main characters is a comic artist. So its a little weird, but still okay.

Wonderful historical fiction, with some slight elements of pagan mysticism. Northwest Europe, circa ninth century, is in upheaval, both political and religious. Corban Loosestrife, the hero of the preceding novel 'The Soul Thief', has tried to abandon the uncertainty and bloodshed of Europe by moving to the New World, where he and his wife, sister, and four children occupy a small coastal island. Corban has a tenuous but peaceful relationship with the neighboring indigenous tribe. In the late spring, Ulf arrives with Corban's sister-in-law, Arre, and Arre's husband Euan, who has become a successful merchant back in Jorvik (York, England). When a warlike native tribe from the West comes to terrorize Corban's family and neighbors, Corban realizes that he has brought with him to the New World a sinister blood omen, which can be lifted only by returning to Denmark and tying up the loose ends he had left fifteen years earlier. He sets out to Europe with his son Conn and Mav's son, Raef. Quickly, they are tied up in the political and tactical intrigue of the kings and bishops of England, Norway, Denmark, and even Germany. Corban's name has become something of legend in the time that he has been gone. He is regarded as a powerful wizard, and as such he is treated as a commodity, looked upon with both awe and suspicion. Meanwhile, Conn and Raef join a fledgling company led by Sweyn, a young man who claims to be the son of the king. Conn and Raef both adjust from life on the small coastal island to continental life, along with all the threats and opportunities entailed by life in the city and in war. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read; however, you must be open (as I am) to slight elements of mysticism in your historical fiction. (Who is to say that pagan magic didn't die out with the spread of Christianity across north Europe?) I suppose that my only gripe is that after the first Act, the events of the novel never return to the island in the New World. However, it is possible that this strand will be tied up in the next novel of the series, 'The Serpent Dreamer'. On a side note, I charitably assume that Ms. Holland was not the one to sign off on the novel's cover art. I believe that Viking helmets did not actually have horns on them; that is a fictional convention which arose in opera.

4.5 stars. This book was really really cool. It seemed to start off a bit slow... getting the characters established and things. And I was a bit worried about Frankie in the beginning, because the relationship she's in is like RED FLAG Central! Like it's SO INCREDIBLY OBVIOUS to me that it's not a good one, just with the way she's thinking and talking about the guy she's with, so... Yeah, I was worried. And then at about the halfway point in the book, the inner Frankie took over and started kicking SERIOUS butt! Like... HOLY CRAP, Frankie is the coolest girl of all time. And I LOVED all the word-play... and how E. Lockhart ties that word-play in at the end. I didn't see it coming, but it totally made sense. Love-love-loved the new vocab... ;) The best thing about Frankie is that she embodies the inner bad-ass we all secretly WANT to be but don't dare to be... (Like how House is the inner JERK-FACE we all secretly want to be but are too nice to be...) One of my friends said that she couldn't really relate to Frankie, and it's true that my mind works in a different way than hers, but who doesn't want to be as awesome as her? I wish I had amazing ideas like hers and the guts to make them happen. It was awesome.

I hate to say it, but I was frustrated with this second Body Finder story. Not because Kim Derting isn't a fine writer. Wow, she is. I love her style, and will definitely read the next book despite being out of sorts with this one. But Violet, the heroine, frustrated me so much in DooD that I found myself putting it down now and then and reading other things. Unfortunately, I felt Violet committed that heroine sin of acting TSTL a few times too often, being unwilling to let anyone know when she went out alone...at night...in deserted places... and when she was stalked, and when authorities contacted her...it just made no sense to me after all she went through in the previous book, despite the natural instinct of her character to keep her ability to herself. I felt she'd learned nothing and hadn't evolved credibly. That said...I still love Kim's story telling, there's something about her atmospheric style that grabs me and I enjoy, despite wanting to off Violet myself a time or two. I am looking forward to whatever happens next.
