Decent sequel to Shadowfall. Perhaps not quite as good.

watch for a review in a forthcoming edition of Geez magazine
i read her "myths and secrets" book first, and found this book to be a little repetitive of much of the topics she'd addressed in the other book (not sure which she had written first, actually)... still a good book.
This book has layers like the Grand Canyon. Each band reveals something significant to the whole story. How is it that a village has no animals? How is it possible that the children in the village have never heard a dog bark, cat meow or goat bleat? The village in Oz’s story is cursed. The windows are shuttered at night and the children all understand, accept that Nehi, the Mountain Demon did it all. Emanuella the Teacher knows the truth, but no one will listen to her and over time she falls silent. Two children, a boy, Matti and a girl, Maya wonder how it happened. Maya is brave and will do whatever it takes; Matti is unsure but want to know what happened. One day while they are out in the woods, they see something miraculous, but they don’t tell anyone. It becomes their secret, their bond. Overtime their wonderment leads to curiosity and that leads to action. They want to find the truth. They set out in search of Nimi, a boy who leaves the village. The truth resides in all of us. A book that takes a few hours to read will reside with you long after the last page. Recall the proverb: Never put off tomorrow what you can do today. A story about how we live our lives and how we treat one another. It is as much about a curse as we are cursed. As James Balwin says, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” Amos Oz is an Israeli writer, novelist, and journalist. He is also a professor of literature at Ben-Gurion University in Be'er Sheva. He is a celebrated author with many awards and honors, but he may be unknown to some. In the tradition of the best allegorical novels, this story is timeless and the subject is humanity.
I absolutely adored this series. The days of going to the library in the summer with my parents, checking out one of these books and spending all my summer days reading...can't think of many memories that beat it!

Pulitzer Prize winner 1961 - I can't believe it took me this long to read this book! Love that the point of view/narration is from a young girl; I think that's what makes the story so special. It packs heavy themes in a quick and easy read. I can see why so many teachers suggest it for their middle/high school students.
Discusses the needs for growth and change in churches toward becoming more outwardly-centered. Also gives very helpful advice for leading the change process.

Amazing look at human history within the brilliant context of a novel. Full of historical and scholastic integrity. It really allows the reader to get their mind around how human history has progressed.

surprisingly good for a book i thought i would loathe from the thesis. however, hoaganson is so thorough in her argument, it's very hard to poke holes. my one complaint is that i don't think she really acknowledges that crises of masculinity happened many times during war, and influenced politics - even taking europe out of it (which, hello, WWI and then the interwar years?) - and maybe the crisis happened earlier in the US than Europe because the US didn't have colonies in the same way - but you can't say that masculinity/lack thereof wasn't part of JFK's presidency, or vietnam. also, she does an excellent job of putting her argument into context - so many americans overlook the spanish-american and filipino american wars - i mean, i'd bet you could survey the public and the majority would say there was no such thing as the filipino-american war, and if they DID remember the spanish-american, if would be all about the Maine and TR. so while i think she argues her point very clearly, and extremely well (it's been so long since i've read such good cultural history!), i think she could have taken it a step further. then again, maybe she's planning a sequel.
