Romances were never my thing, and teenage romances just blow me away with how incredibly pedantic they are. Even well written and envelope pushing romances fall into the category of things I don't care about. That seems really harsh, I know, but I cannot lie. Teenage romances, especially, bring out the most cliche issues, pour on sap, and then end with lots of gushing. This was no exception, despite it's attempt at working with a, for the time, taboo subject. If it hadn't been two female characters falling in "love", it would have been a cookie cutter chick flick, sorry ladies. Aside from the massive problems with logical thinking in this book, the author's agenda was pretty evident, and didn't help the story flow naturally. Like other stories that want to make a point out of a somewhat awkward situation, the pieces seemed to be forced together to say what the author wanted. And what I couldn't get, is that aside from the obvious "mean and evil" characters of Ms. Poindexter and Ms. Baxter, no adult or otherwise in this story tried to make a logical argument either way. It was left to confused and impassioned adolescents to try to work things out on their own. I can't see this being taught in schools, primarily because of the obvious opposition many parents would have for the book's outright stance on a very touchy moral issue. Other than that, in my own classroom, I wouldn't subject my students to it, though I wouldn't forbid it either. Perhaps just a warning to let their parents' know what they're reading before hand. Thinking back on Cart's description of YA in the eighties, this book seems to fit in exactly as he described. I could see how some might try to classify it along the lines of the "problem novel", but it isn't so neatly one or the other, though my own inclination is to put it more in the romance category.
