I'm actually re-reading this one. I remember it being really good 5 years ago!.....Yep- it was still great. I love books that follow the lifespan of a character like this. It just wraps you up and gets you so involved. It's so interesting to think about the way of life in biblical times...puts those Sunday school lessons a little more in perspective. I really enjoyed this book...both times.
I had only read short stories featuring Fleming; and I am pleased that a full length novel held up. Fleming makes reading about vampires fun again - yes, he does have the aversion to killing humans that is so common in literature anymore (but PN Elrod has been doing this for awhile now), but he has a solid flair that fits in nicely as a club owner in the the slightly-shady sides of depression-era Chicago. This volume opens up after he has been viciously tortured by a gangster, and he finds himself both struggling to maintain control of his own violent tendencies and a mob - which he has temporarily inherited until the mob leader gets back on his feet. Fleming is not exactly happy to realize how easily he slips into the role of mob boss, either.
Would it be interesting if the two characters decide at the end to part? I'm not saying that is what happens. This is rather fast moving at times. How about the rest of you? Do you really like to read the steamy parts, or would you rather have the author gloss over them? I've read a lot of Sandra Brown books, and prefer the ones that are not just romance. This one is set partly in Charleston, which is a good location. I'm glad that I read it, but don't think I would reread it.

Great great book. A page turner.
** spoiler alert ** Ugh. If you're going to do a "marriage of convenience" type of romance, you have to get us to the point where we like the hero BEFORE page 200. Seriously. He needs a save the cat moment early on, esp. if he's going to be a rake for most of the book. I know that they end up together, because it's a romance and because I read the little snippet from the sequel at the back of the book. I feel awful for Rue, the heroine, because she deserves better.

Out of all the Alan Moore stuff I've been reading lately, Miracleman is the only thing that's come even close to the same level as Watchmen. Surpasses it, in some respects. But naturally it's caught up in some bullshit legal battle, and is totally out of print. Lovely. If you can get your hands on it, you should.
So much like John Irving. I laughed out loud a few times (points) and couldn't stop reading. But still it didn't blow my mind.

i reread this book this past fall and really enjoyed it much more than I did the first time I read it years ago. I enjoyed the dynamics between the daughters and the mothers.

I hated this book. Flat out hated it. The characters were too stereotyped, with very few twists, the writing was whiny and dragged. I've heard that a movie is being made of this novel and I really don't see how it will be entertaining.
