This book was an eye opener for me, because I found all the conversations I'd had as a kid with my parents outlined in it. Not many people have training in parenthood, so I think a lot of people just do what their parents did. This is worthwhile communication book for parents. The last time I read it, which was now a couple of years ago, one of my favorite parts was a list of responses that shut down communication from kids and the list of easy openers. I also liked the sections on how to approach conversations about problems the kid has vs. problems that you have with the kid's behavior.

Though billed as fiction, "Down and Out in Paris and London" provides a thinly veiled account of George Orwell's own years living amongst the impoverished in the eponymous cities. As one of his first pieces of writing, it's especially interesting to read this book, as you can see his later style already developing, and his thoughts on labor, class systems, and social justice already emerging. Also noticeable are his strains of anti-Semitism and racism, probably mild during the time period and audience for whom he was writing, but nonetheless jarring for a modern reader. Still, despite these antiquated sections, the book remains both fascinating and gruesome in its depiction of early 20th century poverty in wealthy European nations.

To borrow Azu's phrase it was intellectual machismo that made me pick this book up. I gotta say it was one of the densest and most difficult reads of my life. While difficult the book is good and the imagery is very moving. I found that it's easier to understand if you read it aloud. If you are at all like me and haven't read aloud you probably want to find a convenient place to hide away so people don't know that you are reading a book aloud, after all you have a reputation to uphold.

More than any other book I've read, this is like a great novel and a great collection of short stories. I loved the simple yet beautiful style of the writing so much. Finally a book that doesn't feel like the author is trying too hard.

I love this book!! It is an older book with lots of short stories of ladies who gave birth on the "farm." With wonderful midwives as their "doctors." Almost every baby situation complicated or not was deliverable there without complications and of course pain meds!! Giving me greatful hopes and inspiration for my home birth!!

My expectations for this book were not what was in the book. This book is chock full of interesting anecdotes from the author's life. Most are about human contact and his experiences growing up. It was interesting and his writing style is engaging, but it had very little about biking. I'm looking forward to his next book, Momentum is Your Friend, which focuses on one big trip.

I am not really sure what to say about this book...the ending truly threw me for a loop - from page 232 on, I couldn't believe what I was reading and I couldn't put the book down because I had to know how it was all going to end. Suskind did a fantastic job of making me feel sorry for and loathe Grenouille at the same time. His prose pulled me in, not only to the story, but to the characters as well.

I really enjoyed this book! The first of a trilogy regarding the life of Josephine Bonaparte. It is easy to read because of the journal format. This historical fiction takes you through Rose's (later to become Josephine) childhood in Martinique and then to her married life throughout the French Revolution. A fun way to learn about historical people and events. A very good read!
