The first sentence It wasn't a very likely place for disappearances, at least at first glance. Outlander is fascinating story told from the view-point of Claire. I found myself fascinated and liking Claire from the start. I mean, gosh, she is a former combat nurse!! As a nurse myself, and one who served in the military (Ok...nothing big there but I still was in the militaryand proud that I did serve as I did in the reserves), I am intrigued with stories that involve a combat nurse. This facet of Claire brought in a dimension to the story that added great believability for me. Now, that is not the only reason why I like Claire - she is a feisty, she has a sharp tongue and she truly is a compassionate woman. I really enjoyed how she survived, how she utilized her skills, how she knew when to obey and knew when to put her own mind into decisions. I really like Claire. Claire is not my only reason for liking Outlander. I really,really,really like Jaime....

I got this book because it promised interview techinques, which it delivered... to a point. I found a similar problem with this as with many other resume-writing and prepare-to-get-a-job type resources in that they seem to assume I've got a lot more work experience than I have. No, I've never been CEO of a multinational corporation nor have I increased their bottom line by 60%. It wasn't ridiculous though, because they at least offered different examples. This isn't the sort of book you can easily read from cover to cover. The middle section has sample interview questions, and there are too many of them. They become repetitious. It would have been better had the author lumped all the same type questions in the same group, because many of the answer suggestions were "just like you'd answer that other question." Also, the book hammers home the point of the "sixty second sell" and "five point promise" but I had a very hard time finding where this information was outlined. It was presented as if it were obvious and well-understood, but I didn't find a satisfactory description of what this meant, or what the difference was between them. If you're only looking for one book on how to do a good job interview, this isn't the one. If you have a stack of them and are willing to flip through and look for information, this is an okay resource.

bill bryson may not be the greatest artist of prose mankind has ever seen, but heck i hope to someday be able to write like he does funny, insightful, and all these other adjectives that i would list but don't remember because i read this book a long time ago, it couples commentary on the environment with the hysterical hike of two out-of-shape middle aged men. really enjoyable reading
