I read this the first time when I was in elementary school. I obviously didn't remember it at all. It was like reading a totally new book. I enjoyed it, enjoyed the moral lessons it taught, but wonder what would have happened to the book if it had been written today. It's definitely a classic, however, and something everyone should read.

** spoiler alert ** Overall, not bad. I will be reading the sequels (Monster Nation and Monster Planet) but I hope the writing improves. It's a neat twist to have a thinking zombie but then it's squandered with the Druid and the mind control aspect. I'll suspend disbelief enough to go along with traps set by the survivors and the thinking zombie leading the pack, but mind control? Only mummies get dexterity? Too many things were just shoved in there with no explanation. I thought the author did well with the setting (traveling around some of these places daily gave me a good feel for the difficulties survivors would have) and he had good, believable solutions for some problems, but every so often there would just be something pushed too far. We'll see if the sequels get better.
