From the beginning, awkward and irritating. Trying too hard and it's abundantly clear. Plus, I felt like the emerald skull was a little racist, as it's evil but mimics Aztec religious rituals. I dunno. Maybe if I were a 12 yr old boy, this would have done more for me, but I'm not and I just read it because I had to review it. I'd stick to Harry Potter or other, better-written young adult novels, though, I think.

Showed me that I deserved to be happy, at a time when I wasn't. It really changed my life, and I'm very grateful.

Scarry and I can talk teens into reading it! I like this one cuz it has a CD in the back, sometimes I think Poe makes more sense when I hear it.

I read this 100 times as a child, no kidding. From beginning to end then back to beginning. The plot is pretty much nonexistent, but the characters fuel a kid's imagination.

This book is really good. It keeps you interested, has a great underlying sense and tells a very good and interesting story. Virtually everyone that I have shared it with has seemed to like it as well. It has broad appeal and will leave you wanting to hike the Appalachian Trail and asking your self why you would all at the same time.

My first Hemingway novel. I was pleasantly suprised, I loved his writing style and was convinced by the end of the book that I could read Spanish fluently! It was especially interesting to see Pans Labyrinth days after I finished the book, it helped me understand the movie that much better. Note: The movie is in no way based on this book, it just has a similar setting.

This book is 413 pages long and I finished it in an evening. Not a night, an evening. I made my dinner while reading and I ate it while reading. For just over six hours I sat and did nothing but read!! So how good was this book? It was addictive! Mystery, crime, romance. A little action – and by action I’m primarily thinking of a fist fight. The novel switches between the points of view of the two main characters – Ellie and Mikey. You meet both’s family and discover their very different worlds. Mikey lives on a council estate and brings in the only real earnings (non benefit money) that his family has by working in a local pub. Ellie’s in Year Eleven, a few months away from her GCSEs and lives in a house with an electric gate and a proper lawn. Their worlds collide when Mikey’s sister accuses Ellie’s brother of raping her. At the start of the novel Mikey decides to try and get information out of Ellie that might help his sister’s legal case and the two become friends without Ellie realising who Mikey really is. Ellie and Mikey were both written in a very sensitive way and all the characters in this book shone with a gentle, truthful light. It’s part of what makes this book so endearing, that honesty. Mikey’s mum, his sisters, they all seemed so real - they were well rounded characters, I guess you’d say. A very powerful story moves this book along, but the novel doesn’t end where you think it will. Jenny Downham lets the characters write her novel, not a timeline, and I think that’s part of what makes her such a fantastic author. I liked some of the poetry of her descriptions, which always seemed appropriate to the character who was in the scene. That sort of detail made these characters seem vulnerable and wise all at the same time. It also made them seem hopeful and this is the sort of novel which needed some of that. I don’t think another author writing this story could have improved on it at all. Well done Jenny D. I haven’t read ‘Before I Die’ yet, it always sounded a little dark to me, but having read ‘You Against Me’ I think I will read it now. Anything which could have been better? Well I always prefer a novel to be written in the 1st person, not the 3rd person, and the author’s use of the term ‘serious’ did grate a little (you’d have to have read the book to understand I guess, serious. *evil laugh*). Cover comment: AWESOMENESS!! The back cover seals the deal though... “You want this to be a love story?” I don’t know who did the cover art/synopsis stuff for this book, but if I ever wrote a novel worth its salt I’d hire them in a heartbeat! Overall verdict: touching, heartwarming, pulse pounding. I defy you not to love this book.
