Generally, I hear a lot of hype about a book and I think, "it can't be that good." Sometimes I'm surprised...I really did enjoy The Help, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and The Hunger Games series even after hearing about them for months. Sometimes I'm disappointed (Freedom...I will never stop talking about how much I hated this book...sorry). I guess it could all be a matter of taste...perhaps uber-literary isn't what I'm into. Take a look at what I've read and rated highly and you be the judge. All of that being said, read The Night Circus. It's wonderful. You know all of those books that are called "The-next-fill-in-the-blank-but usually-it's-Harry-Potter-or-Twilight-for-adults"? This really does fill a tiny Harry Potter hole. It's not dark like The Magicians or Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and it's not too fluffy and romantic like some fantastical books can be. It's the perfect blend of magic, intrigue, dreams, and love. Not to leave the Twilight fans out of this -- you will like this, too. While I have my issues with Twilight, it was a good story...but this. Oh, this is dangerous love. This is what passion is really like...with a heavy dose of magic. I can't say enough. The one teeny flaw: I wanted more at the end...a little more explanation, a little more of Marco and Celia and Isobel and Poppet and Widget and Bailey...just a few more pages. Loved it. Side note: I'm a little nervous about a movie adaptation...this deserves so much more than just a couple of hours on screen. It deserves a mini-series!
