Fun and cheesy, but suspenseful, and perfect to listen to on our long drive.

Vignettes of Southside Virginia history, especially Smithfield, Virginia (Rouse's home town). Although Parke Rouse was an institution, and really tried to be truthful in his reportage and avoid Old South mythology, this book, like others he wrote, is flawed by his amnesia concerning the shameful Massive Resistance era of Virginia.

Read this in high school. It's terrific. BUT you need to give it time. It does not catch you right away but if you stick with it, it will. It's every used-bookstore's hidden secret.
The book was interesting but not as much as Freakonomics. He seemed to enjoy himself talking more than the subject matter. It was ok but I struggled to finish.

I was given this book when I was much younger and never finished it. I found it hard to read, not making much sense at the time. Now, I found it easy to read and very applicable to defending the Christian faith. The reason, I think, can be summed up in this quote taken directly from page 144: "Whenever you find any statement in Christian writings which you can make nothing of, do not worry. Leave it alone. There will come a day, perhaps years later, when you suddenly see what it meant." In this book, C.S. Lewis brilliantly gives his rational case for the Christian faith to believers and nonbelievers alike. His writing is as applicable today, as it was printed in 1952.

This book was awsome
I went between just loving this book to at times finding a few of the characters to be a bit of a cliche---there were times, of course, where the satire was just spot-on and amazing, but at other times, here and there, the satire just verged into caricature (whether intentional or not, it lost me a little bit). But the wonderful interiority of the characters, the psychological astuteness of it all, kept me going. Such a world. An impressive, wonderful book.

I read this book awhile ago and don't remember much about it but I know it is funny. (8 and up) I read this book while I was on vacation. It was a very quick read and kind of funny. I think young kids would love this book. It would be a quick read for parents to read to there kids.

Again an incredible short story by Manna Francis. Toreth is simply a brilliantly written character and the dialogue hilarious and so spot-on. The near-psychopathic attributes of Toreth are unintentionally funny (especially when I find the same qualities in myself - woops!) As always, try not to read this out of sequence.
