I read this back when I was following the Oprah book club selections more faithfully than I do now. I believe it is Haitian writer Danticat's first book, and tells the story of her people's suffering and courage. A very timely book.

** spoiler alert ** To a God Unknown is the story of Joseph Wayne, who leaves Vermont for California and becomes obsessed with the land. A lonely, hardened man, Joseph begins his California experience alone and after being briefly joined by his brothers and taking a wife, ends it alone. He sees the spirit of his late father as living in the tree outside his home and begins to worship at its alter. After the tree is killed by his God-fearing brother Burton, Joseph eventually transfers his worship to a rock in a mysterious glade - the same rock that causes the death of his wife Elizabeth and that Joseph eventually ends his own life upon. To a God Unknown is pure Steinbeck but falls a little short for me in comparison to the other books of his I've read. Still, all in all, an enjoyable, powerful book that touches on faith, determination and a strong communion with the land.

This book was a real page turner. The miracle of freedom, from the defeat of the Assyrians to destroy Judah, the Greeks victory of the Persians at Thermopylae and Salamis (Think of the movie 300), and the failure of the Mongols to conquer Europe in AD 1241 (interesting read on Genghis Khan), I have just mentioned three out of the seven that were my favorite, but the whole book is chalked full of history on these seven events, followed by a "What it Meant" in regards to freedom. I find myself anxious to read Chris and Ted Stewarts first book, Seven Miracles That Saved America.

Not only is Roald Dahl the quintessential author for children's literature/fiction, he is also a very talented adult writer. He proves it in these stories - creepy, suspenseful, and fun.

In general I'm a much bigger fan of clever than funny and while I found this book very funny, I didn't think it was particularly clever. It's probably the simple difference the author listing their profession as "comedian" and not "humorist." Honestly I really enjoy Chelsea's brash style of humor but it didn't translate perfectly for me in book form. Many times I couldn't decipher the sarcasm that is so important in truly getting her. I laughed a lot, but think that I'll probably just go to the show when I'm looking for her pop-culture barbs instead of reading another of her books. I don't think she'd be upset when I call her book great for laughs, but kind of trashy.

This was my first dystopia. I liked it so much that when asked to do a 5min summary in my high school english class, I launched into a 25min talk without even realizing I had gone over my 5min.

My second book by Connelly. I enjoyed it, but it didn't sweep me off my feet.

The good? This was pretty funny-- occasionally brilliant-- and gave me an insight into the inner workings of professional comedians. The meh? The plot was so-so, which is totally to be expected, and the flow felt a bit forced. As if this was born of a few funny sketches then bonded together in a flimsy manner. Still, this was a decent "lazy Sunday" read.
我喜欢这本关于剪贴簿和剪贴簿作者(尤其是女性的说服力)的有趣但令人恐惧的真实文章。 很高兴知道我并不孤单! :-)
