A fixer, in the parlance of the international press, is a local who "fixes" visiting journos with access. He provides them with translation and access - sometimes directly to the front lines of battle. In this case, however, what he fixes Joe Sacco with is his own sad story, and story of the shattered lives of some other figures in the Balkan war. As is customary, he weaves multiple stories into the major story line of the book, but in this case he jumps back and forth continuously, making it tough to follow. Despite this, and the difficulty that this native English speaker has with keeping the various Balkan names straight, the power of the tale is impossible to deny.

An outlandish tale set during the Civil War and starring a boy who is better at lying than telling the truth. Homer P. Figg has amazing adventures (or at least reports to) as he tries to rescue his brother who has been forced into the Union army. Did he really help out the Underground Railroad? Escape from kidnappers? You'll have to decide when you read this book!

This was absolutely entrancing, an almost magical look at the Viet Nam War and it's aftermath by an American woman who lived much of it. Her friendships with the peasants who fought and lived and worked and somehow survived in those perilous times are testaments to the healing and beauty to be found in the laying aside of enmity and distrust between former enemies. Her rich cultural and historical snapshots are infused with humor, insight, camaraderie, compassion, and if I could give a few books 5+ stars, this would be one.

First off, I didn't like this book very well for a couple of reasons. One is that it was about identity theft. Two is that it's about elder abuse. I think the main reason that I didn't like it is that it was about a modern day problem, but it's set in the late '80s, before identity theft Was the problem that it is today. It's sort of an anachronism. I was so hesitant to read further in the book that I took nearly a month to finish it. Very unsettling. I'm just glad to have the book off my back, so to speak. I wouldn't have finished it except that I Bought it. OTOH, you can't fault Sue Grafton's writing, which was as good as usual. And her characters were strong.
I loved this time-bending tale that winds together the paths of characters in San Francisco and New York connected by the teen-punk scene, the music industry, family, and getting old. It's twisted, hilarious and familiar. I'm pretty sure Egan partied in San Francisco in the 90s.

This book is a short yet intellectually challenging piece of non-fiction. The text is basically a discourse upon the logic of the identities of ambiguity, vagueness and metaphor. The three terms are often used interchangeably, especially ambiguity and vagueness, even though they are in fact different. Take for example ambiguity and vagueness. Ambiguity addresses the incapability of applying a definite meaning to a term. On the other hand, vagueness deals with an element having an infinite number of possible extensions or applications. The text goes on to discuss the relationships between the three also. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in logic or enjoys analyzing data. Personally, the language of the text is ironically confusing because of its attempt to be clear and brief with its explanations about ideas on the identities of ambiguity, vagueness and metaphor.

the plot in this book is that jamie and his mom got in to a problem and had to move. they moved in to jamies mom's freinds house. and jamie had a good time becuase it was like he had a family. a mom and a dad and a little sister to pick on. i can connect to this book becuase me and jamies fathers aren't living with us. and that is how we can conect and jamie gets a father out of his moms friend. just like how i get a father out of my uncles. i rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. becuase sometimes it was boring. and i didnt want to read it anymore but the other parts were really good. if you like books were people have family problems. then you would love to read this book but if you dont like that kind of book then dont read this book.
