Damn, this book is great. I've only read two books by Atwood, but this and The Blind Assassin are enough to place among my favorite authors. I love her, even though she is really old and somewhat decrepit. She's a really good writer. Supposedly this is the type of book that only literary snobs like, so I'm not sure I'd recommend this to very many people. But I'm totally* not a literary snob and this is one of the top 10 best books I've read. Hooray for unexpectedly good reads! Atwood's writing here isn't a fluid as her later novel, but everything else is basically perfect. The entire novel just, um, tickled my fancy. I'm not sure if it will for anyone else, because not a lot really happens in the novel, and it's slightly confusing, and my taste in books might even be a bit questionable, but damn, this book is great. On a side note: this is the only book by Atwood that's on Bloom's Western Canon, and I'm curious as to whether this is because Atwood's other books aren't as good or because Harold Bloom is a tool. Maybe both? Regardless, there are only like ten Canadian books on Bloom's list so it's somewhat useless when I'm looking for Canadian literature. And Atwood really makes me want to read more Canadian literature. At the very least I'm definitely going to read some more Atwood. *definitely completely entirely unquestionably etc. (view spoiler)
