This book certainly made my day. It was exactly what I needed. Lighthearted, fun, humor and a lot of sex and a main character even clumsier than me. Here's for hoping there are more books coming in this series!

Idk why this book was so hard to get through when you couldn't pry my bony little fingers away from "the Da Vinci Code" or "Angels and Demons"! It took me 3 different attempts and a full calendar year almost to get into this book. Even then, I wasn't fully enraptured with the story line...I merely just started to hate it less. I found it to be redundant and lackluster. There was only one brief moment where I was surprised/shocked (which I won't mention cus' I hate spoilers....unless the anticipation is killing ME) apart from that, I predicted every single thing before it "miraculously" was revealed to me. I'm sorry-I feel like judas to my beloved Dan Brown- but this book just bored me. I have only once ever stopped reading a book midway....as I have only walked out of a movie about the same amount, but this? I finished out of sheer will power. And an immense stubborness I have to finish what I start. And to be honest, it wasn't unlike a number of college courses I've taken: after turning in my final exams....nada. Couldn't tell you what this book was REALLY about.

I think I expected a much different book then I got... but I was pleasantly surprised. I admit that when I picked this book up I expected a classic ghost story, which I did not receive. Every person in this book was solid flesh and bone. What I did receive was a classic monster story. Not that there was anything incredibly supernatural- the monsters in this book were of an entirely human nature- and all the more fascinating (and frightening) for that. Perhaps what first drew me in was the first introduction to the little Italian professor. I felt compelled to read passages out loud to people sitting next to me (probably because I had to have some explanation for my random outbursts of laughter.) I started this book in England and I think that may have had an effect on my fond feelings for this book... but I was charmed by it. It did seem a little long, but I liked it a lot. In fact I would class the "feel" of this book with one of my favorite books from this time period- Jane Eyre. The characters were engaging and the book was interesting. I would love to come by a hard copy of this book, but for now the one in my kindle will do :) The only real drawback is the length, but the warmth and wit of the characters well makes up for it.

It was good at the beginning, but it just seemed to drag on and on. It could have been a good short story, but 213 pages was just too much. I also didn't like how the narrative was back and forth between the past and present, and how some of the characters reacted to each other. I'm glad it was a quick read because it wouldn't be worth it (and still isn't worth it).

A very interesting and, at times, darkly humorous take on religion, knowledge, society, science - the "big ideas." The book was well formatted and up until the latter third of the book, kept me in the dark as to what would happen, which is such a rarity these days. I genuinely felt like I was wandering this world along with the narrator, stringing together pieces of information to form some sort of path. It also is a great tool to use to teach some basic ideas of storytelling. The whole thing is framed within the fictional religion of Bokononism, which serves as a reference point for the reader and basic ideas, such as Chekhov's gun in the form of Ice-nine, is nicely employed as well. All in all, a fun read.

I really enjoyed the historical bits on the Mormon western expansion and the (rather unflattering!) portrait of Brigham Young, but the present-day murder mystery story seemed like a sidenote and failed to interest me. After finishing this 500-page novel, the only thing I'm wondering is whether or not the author is Mormon.
