This was a delightful read, and something I really needed after reading a couple of disappointing fantasy books. It was, by contrast, so refreshingly well-written and real. I finished it in a day, and then that night at dinner the kids were whining about their food, and so I shared with them what people had to eat (or not eat) on Guernsey during the German occupation of WWII. That shut them up. One of my favorite parts was one of the literary members letters to Juliet in which he shares one of his favorite lines he read from Shakespeare, "The bright day is done, and we are for the dark." He explains: "I wish I'd known those words on he day I watched those German troops land, plane-load after plane-load of them--and come off ships down in the harbor! All I could think of was 'damn them, damn them', over and over. If I could have thought the words "the bright day is done and we are for the dark," I'd have been consoled somehow and ready to go out and contend with circumstance--instead of my heart sinking to my shoes." What a fabulous description of the power of words! And the power of learning and good literature. Giving a name to something brings peace and consolation, while the unknown brings fear. I loved the lines so much, I grabbed a pen and underlined them, forgetting as I did so that the book was not actually mine, but had been lent to me by Tammy! Sorry Tammy!
