By far the best of the Buckley biographies out there.

The introduction of the book was fairly slow but overall, it was an extremely romantic book. Against all odds, they were able to find true love.

An over-the-top lampoon of literary academia. The enjoyment derived from the book relies upon "getting" the insider-y jokes, allusions, and off-hand remarks about literary theory. While this is fun stuff for English majors, James Hynes totally goes off the deep end in the last 50 pages of the novel. Publish and Perish, Hynes's collection of three short "supernatural" novellas about academia, suffered from the same flaw. It feels a bit much to combine Richard Russo-esque caricatures with second-rate Gothic rumbles and tumbles.

This novel was not as gripping as others in the series. It is set when Kinsey Milhone is younger and deals with an unsolved crime that is set even further in the past--the kidnapping of child. The reliability of Kinsey's client is called into question early on and adds some interest to the plot. The flashbacks to the time period of the crime aren't particularly convincing, especially the descriptions and actions of the "hippy" flower children living in the school bus. Kinsey does use some of her trademark ingenuity to follow clues and make connections, and the author does provide her usual thorough descriptions of place and character. A subplot related to Kinsey's childhood and family relations is only mildly compelling. Whether Grafton is running out of steam remains to be seen.

This was a book club pick and probably not something I would have chosen. It was ok, but seemed like an advertisement for WalMart.

This was a delightful read, and something I really needed after reading a couple of disappointing fantasy books. It was, by contrast, so refreshingly well-written and real. I finished it in a day, and then that night at dinner the kids were whining about their food, and so I shared with them what people had to eat (or not eat) on Guernsey during the German occupation of WWII. That shut them up. One of my favorite parts was one of the literary members letters to Juliet in which he shares one of his favorite lines he read from Shakespeare, "The bright day is done, and we are for the dark." He explains: "I wish I'd known those words on he day I watched those German troops land, plane-load after plane-load of them--and come off ships down in the harbor! All I could think of was 'damn them, damn them', over and over. If I could have thought the words "the bright day is done and we are for the dark," I'd have been consoled somehow and ready to go out and contend with circumstance--instead of my heart sinking to my shoes." What a fabulous description of the power of words! And the power of learning and good literature. Giving a name to something brings peace and consolation, while the unknown brings fear. I loved the lines so much, I grabbed a pen and underlined them, forgetting as I did so that the book was not actually mine, but had been lent to me by Tammy! Sorry Tammy!

This was an excellent first book by Peter V Brett. He has created a world where demons rule the night as people cower in their warded homes. Finally a young boy,Arlen, has had enough and sets out to find ways to kill the demons. Interwoven are two other characters, Leesha, a herb gather/healer and Rojer a traveling minstrel and their stories as well. I can see the influence of both Terry Brooks and George R.R. Martin in his writing. Certainly if you enjoy this type of literature you will enjoy The Warded Man.
