It's not a strong story, and the characters are poor/fixed.

There's not much I can say about this book that hasn't already been said.... Tolstoy's characters are always stunning in their humanity and he portrays life in a way that is remarkable in its simplicity and depth. Highly recommended, and worthy of several reads.

This book has been on my very long "to-read" list since 2011. After making a resolution to myself that I would tackle books that have been long simmering on that epic list, this was the luck of the draw. And I am so glad it was. Having been a fan of the Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, and only somewhat aware of the true lives of this distinguished but seemingly doomed family, I was ready. The story follows Charlotte and her family from childhood(done retrospectively) into early adulthood and to their deaths. It chronicles their escape from their dreary lives on the moors of Yorkshire by penning stories and poems that will be considered some of the greatest of English literature. Considered socially stunted and doomed to spinsterhood,Charlotte wrote truthfully of women's emotions and struggle in dealing with love and the men in her life.Wile she seemed to accept her lot in life, she railed against it in her novels. She was a proper lady of her day with a heart that yearned for passionate love.Written under a pen name, the public was titillated and soon it became quite the subject of speculation as to who was the true author. And through it all Charlotte and her sisters went about their lives. And when love came to call, it found Charlotte reluctant. The woman with all that passion in her prose, could not believe that she would be capable of passion in real life. I was taken by the style of writing as much as the substance. The line between fact and fiction was almost seamless. This blend is hard to pull off. But it was done brilliantly here. I'm so glad I dusted off that "to-read" shelf. This was a treasure.
This novel of the Plague in England was interesting. It gave me an entirely different perspective on this momentous event in history that most authors just mention. From the viewpoint of someone who is quarantined in a village rotting of plague, Brooks is able to bring to life the stories of villagers effected by this deadly illness. Sad, empowering, and sometimes extremely depressing, this book charts the path of the plague through a small village and documents their struggles and successes in their fight for survival. I found it a good read.

Dee Dee IS punk rock. Reading this book is punk rock. It also a beautiful meditation on what is truly screwed up in this world, and how to find solace amongst in the worst in life. After I started getting into this book, around the time Dee Dee spoke of recording the song, "Listen to My Heart," I felt a shudder. I promptly listened to the song, and kept a Ramones loop going while reading the rest of the book. I finished the book, and the loop remains.
Enough people have provided a synopsis of this book, so I think I'll refrain from that point. In spite of my four-star rating, I do agree with many of the comments from detractors. I typically don't read popular fiction, but the book was given to me as a gift and looked interesting enough. I have to say it's much better than the last couple popular fiction books I deigned to read (e.g, Dan Brown, Mystic River, The Lovely Bones), which were all so watered down and written at such a simplistic level. Can I get a polysyllabic word please? I'd like to read a book and see a word every now and then that I don't know the meaning of (thank you, Joseph Heller). Yes, this book was a bit cliche. The fact that Sallander falls for whom she does in the book made absolutely no sense to me - where did that even come from? And who is Blomkvist, the Brad Pitt of Swedish journalists? Every woman he came into contact with was ready to hop into bed with him. And while I won't put any spoilers in here, I do agree that the red herrings were lame (I knew that's what they were when they were mentioned), and it was very clear to me what the "reason" behind Harriet's disappearance was, despite the fact that I didn't see all of the ending coming. So I've ranted, yet I still rated this novel four stars. Why? Well, it was almost 500 pages, and I read it in a very short time. It kept me engaged, had a pretty good plot despite some obvious lame spots, and developed the characters enough to the point where I'd already purchased the next two in the series about halfway through the novel. But I'm not jumping right into the next novel yet, despite the lack of total resolution at the end of the book. I hope the pace picks up in The Girl Who Played With Fire.
