A good friend recommended this quite a while ago and I finally got around to reading it. I both liked it and hated it at the same time. I really enjoyed the historical parts of the book but found the actual story leaving me thinking, "How much more can one person endure?" only to dive into another tragedy.

A highly personal book written in a clear comforting but thought provoking style. This is an author that I would love to meet.

This is a fun read if you want a taste of European 20th century, mostly social, history told through the life story of playboy/novelist/actor José Villalonga. He's a member of the Spanish nobility or really the European nobility since he lived all over Europe and seemed to know every plenty of kings and princes, as well as politicians, socialites and actors. He called upon his contacts when writing for magazines (he also wrote novels) and he talks about his experiences with everyone from Grace Kelly to Mitterrand to his family friend Count Grandi (the Italian fascist politician who helped depose Mussolini). He talks about his affairs- with everyone from a Gabor sister to the prostitutes of Paris and Barcelona- and his part-time acting career (he was Audrey Hepburn's rich boyfriend in "Breakfast at Tiffany's").

A little slow at times.

This was a lot of fun. The way that all the logical impossibilities were presented had me laughing out loud a lot. And I really enjoyed how the story is about Yossarian, but it's presented from the point of view of every other character in the novel.

My friends in Kunming loved it (but then again, it is a bit of a "girly" book... a couple of times it felt like an awkward romance novel), so I tried it out. The back of the book said something like "a world that is wild and new yet achingly familiar" and I actually did get deja vu a few times! Perhaps it's from my crazy Asian background and the fact that I moved between the US and Taiwan growing up. Nazneen is sent from Bangledash into an arranged marriage, where, after years of a loveless marriage (to, I think, an adorable and sweet man), she starts having to make her own decisions. For such a thick book, the story didn't leave me disappointed in the end (as can so often happen). Have to suspend your disbelief quite a few times but whatever - it's enjoyable! Edit: Just looked it up, and it's a movie as well! Cool!

I'm disappointed , I was really looking forward to read it but i don't feel happy after finishing it , so I might read in a couple of months to see how I 'd feel then about it.
