3-3/4 stars. I'm bordering on really really liking this book, but there were some slight issues I had with it, so I'm being non-committal, kinda like Kate. This one was much less confusing than the first in the series, and, imo, better written, more suspenseful, more action packed, and Kate was on a better level. The concept of the flare and how it was used was quite interesting, and the new characters, while falling flat in some places, really brought some spice to the story in others. The use of Celtic mythology in this story really drew me in since it is one of my favorites and I've always been fascinated with Morrighan and her three aspects, as well as the heroes and bad guys. And generally, that part of the book didn't disappoint. The Shepherd and his demon mermaids were really brought to life, so it was fun, and Bran was everything you want to see in a Celtic bad-a hero. Kate was a better version of herself than in the first book, but she's still being a little slow on the uptake. Her general blindness where it comes to men can be really irritating at times, but it was the length of time it took for her to put together all the pieces of the demon puzzle that I took issue with in this one. I felt like it was very drawn out, and while the final battle was worth the time it took to get there, it was really annoying to know more about what was going on than the protagonist who is supposed to be "all that". She is pretty awesome in her skills and magic though, and her negotiations are turning into an art form, so overall she's a great character to base the story around. Keiran (I can't remember how exactly to spell his name and I listened to this one on audio) was definitely the same character. I would love to see another side to him, and while there was some juicy hints that there's more to him than the big bad alpha with a short temper, there wasn't nearly enough of it going around. If he and Kate continue their merry-go-round, I hit you, you take me down relationship in the next book, I may be throwing it across the room in utter frustration (guess I better get this on in print since throwing my ipod is non-optional). There is obviously a lot more going on in that relationship even though Kate won't admit it even to herself. Word of warning: Lots of cursing and course language at times in this one, quite a bit by way of sexual tension and innuendo, but no sex scenes, and a moderate amount of violence and graphic gore.
