Pretty basic, common sense principles. Nothing new and exciting stuff, but helpful for those that just have no clue.

New Rules of High School started out strong and then it felt like Nelson just gave up. It follows Max through his senior year of high school. Max is the editor of the school paper, the perfect student, perfect son with a perfect girlfriend. One day he decides to break up with his girlfriend for no clear reason, but that it just didn't feel right anymore - which is fine. Then he starts hanging out with downtown club kids, getting drunk and crashing his car, and losing his virginity to a girl he doesn't even like. It almost felt like the boy version of Nelson's "Girl" - which was my favorite book through high school. Except girl is fully formed and follows the characters through their relationships and struggles until Andrea, the main character comes to a new understanding about herself. In New Rules I think Nelson wants this to happen - characters are introduced - but they never go anywhere. It's unclear why we're supposed to assume certain characters have had any impact on Max because it doesn't seem like they have much of a relationship. There wasn't any character development. I feel like what he was trying to get across is that things that happen in high school don't matter so much once you leave high school. Max's life seems to be self destructing and his parents keep telling him he's ruining all of his chances for a good college and a good life. But it doesn't build to that or show us how Max comes to under stand that. It just ends in what feels like it should be the middle of the book and then he tacked an epilogue on the end that was a little contrived and said basically that two years later everything worked out and things that happen in high school don't really matter anyway.

The actor Steve Martin wrote the book Shop girl. This isn’t a type of book that I would usually read but surprisingly I enjoyed it. I thought the book was well written and it was a good easy flow throughout the story. He uses her thought process in order to paint a visual for the reader and the interaction between characters was well done. Steve Martin is an actor/ comedian so I was surprised to see that he wrote this book. I feel like he stepped out if his comfort zone to write it and he did a good job. After reading the book I thought that the point of this book was that you have to understanding that you need live life and enjoy/ hold on to the special moments. They might not last long but the memory will last a lifetime. In this story, Maribelle (main character) is looking for affection from a man but can’t seem to find what she wants. She experiences different types of relationships throughout the book, starting with a younger man named Jeremy. He has a hard time communicating with Maribelle and being passionate with her. On the other hand she has another man. He is much older, rich, successful, divorced, and selfish, desiring her without obligation but he wanted her around. Usually using materials in order to keep her around; “Ray Stays in L.A. for three days, sees Mirabelle one more night, calls her twice, hurts her inadvertently one more time, levitates her spirit once, makes love to her again, buys her a watch and a blouse, compliments her hair, gets her a subscription to Vogue, but rarely, maybe twice, kisses her.” Even though she doesn’t realize it yet but she still feels unfulfilled. As I continued to read the book, I started to enjoy reading it more and more and after finishing it I got a stronger respect/ appreciation of the book known that it came from an actor/ funny man, Steve Martin. He did a good job laying out the story and creating and explaining scenes. This book in my opinion was enjoyable and from it took that your most memorable and favorite moments in life can come from simple or small experiences.
Of course amazing as always and I can't wait to read the next one! Twists and turns I wasn't quite ready for and more unknown till the next one and hope it doesn't end in the way it seems it will.

Just a couple of quick notes about this book: It was intriguing, written with the right balance of emotion and objectivity. I think everyone who lives in New York should read about the life that goes on beneath our streets. I wonder, since the book was written in 1993, whether it has changed much. I suspect it has. There are many descriptions of drug-addicted homeless people from the Upper West Side. The author was brave, not only because she physically put herself in danger but because she descended into a whole other world and had to accurately portray it to our world. She risked not only being killed but being the stupid, young, white girl who got what she deserved for not knowing to stay away. What this book is about: Basically, there are or were "Mole People" although the reality is probably a little different from what you think. There were thousands estimated to be living in subway and train tunnels, sometimes as far as 7 stories below ground. The people's stories she chooses to tell are heartbreaking and simple and complex. Many are drug addicts. Remember, this was the early nineties when heroin was back in form and crack was introduced. Many also have jobs and families. Many make a family out of people they live with. They will defy your expectations as well as confirm your suspicions. Toth also puts their lifestyle in the context of past underground dwellers, talks about conflicts with the police and homeless advocacy organizations and in general tries to give a bigger picture. But the times I was most drawn in was when she was describing the people she met. I love when she encounters "Sam" the mayor of a small community who was a social-worker above ground and quotes Walt Whitman. What I got from this book: Living underground is freedom and abuse, safety and danger, lucidity and insanity.
Let's just say, if you are looking for Catch-22, you are going to be disappointed.

Ridiculous premise, though still mildly entertaining due to Stahl's wit and nack for creating horrific yet comical situations.

While probably a realistic look at what could have happened to these characters had they lived through WWI and WWII, I didn't like the pessimistic tone and hated the things she had them do to one another. I prefer to remember Colin, Mary, and Dickon as happy children who have just discovered love rather than as adults who have been scarred by it.

Here is another we gave to Tim's Mom, this one was for Mother's Day 2011 I believe. She read it quickly and gave it back to us, I forgot to ask her what she thought of it. Tim's Mom is French (born in Jacksonville, Oregon of French immigrant parents). She has been to France three times and keeps up with her relatives there. I don't know when we will get to this book and we will eventually!
