I've been simultaneously reading several books on pet nutrition, and this is the first I've finished. The is clear, to-the-point, and incredibly well written. Ms. Weiskopf makes clear distinctions between dietary needs of cats and dogs, which other books don't. Cats are obligate carnivores, where dogs are omnivores. It's a big difference in diet. The book is easy to navigate: you can find which common foods are toxic, what to look for in commercial food, or recipes for making your own food for your pets in a flash.

The “Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” was a challenging read for me, as is all magical realism. It took me a while to get the rhythm of the book, and to get comfortable with the writing style – no quotation marks for dialogue, copious footnotes explaining political and pop culture references, significant use of Spanglish, etc. But about half way through the book it finally clicked for me and subsequently – I really liked it. It’s a complicated story that constantly flips through time and between narrators. It tells the story of Oscar Wao’s family on his mother’s side. We learn about the family curse or “fukú” and the suffering it causes through generations. A large part of the book focuses on his mother and grandfather as well as the politics of the Dominican Republic. I didn’t have difficulty with the non-translated Spanish throughout the book, but I’m surprised that the general English-speaking public and critic community has embraced the book, even awarding it the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in literature. I’m also surprised that the pop culture references and the very necessary and lengthy footnotes didn’t turn people off. The footnotes were a god-send to me who will stop reading and Google references with which I’m not familiar. The book almost reads like a fable for adults, full of symbolism and in its own way full of beautiful prose. I definitely recommend the book, with the caveat that there’s a lot of non-translated Spanish and a lot of footnotes – sometimes half a page long!

This was read aloud by our English teacher when we were in 7th grade. All during the war we saw matinees with Japanese committing atrocities toward children. No one ever sheltered us from violence during WWII, quite the contrary. This wonderful book showed us the injury to the innocent Japanese families. I shall always remember it. It gave us balance. These people were not the enemy. They were just people caught up in the times.

First book in the series that will be 9 books in the end. As far as Star Wars books go its entertaining. Some of the parallels to current events are very interesting. Its hard to have an opinion about the book without thinking about the series overall. The series looks like its going to your standard fall - redemption tale. The authors say there will be surprises. Still its got great action and pacing.

It is hard to review The Dark Side: Truly Terrifying Tales because the stories varied so much in quality. There were stories from famous writers such as Edgar Allen Poe and Stephen King, as well as stories from lesser known writers, and there were a few adaptations of myths from various parts of the world. Overall, I enjoyed the anthology. The stories are geared towards young people and are mildly scary and definitely entertaining. There is no extremely graphic violence and no sexually explicit material, making this a suitable anthology for older children. (May be too scary for little ones) Some of the topics of the stories included a man's encounter with a troll in the frozen wilderness, a toy teddy bear that is given too much robotic intelligence by an inventor, a story of a young werewolf, and a ring with supernatural powers.
