“¿Qué pasa cuando uno pertenece a una cultura secundaria? ¿Qué pasa cuando uno escribe en una lengua marginal? Sobre estas cuestiones reflexiona Gombrowicz en su Diario y la cultura argentina le sirve de laboratorio para experimentar sus hipótesis. En este punto Borges y Gombrowicz se acercan. Ricardo Piglia

An adorable if slightly gory story. I will be watching for what's next from this author.
!!! One of my favorite books this year, and absolutely phenomenal via audio, Steven Boyer's narration is among the best I've heard period. Jack Kearns is by far my favorite character I've been introduced to in some time. Absolutely horrible human being, but endlessly entertaining. Not sure if I'll do a full review, or wait and just do a series review when I've finished as I plan on barreling strait through the first three and getting the fourth upon release. Still--this series was so worth the wait, very highly recommended.

I read this version in one night. It's so beautifully translated that you forget you're reading Beowulf.

I just love this series. Smart, funny, tons of action - and what a way to brush up on (or learn lots of new stuff about) Greek mythology. On to the next one!

As posted in [http://www.amazon.com]: I'm sorry but I really do not see what was special in Martinez' *Parrot in the Oven* that reaped him some awards. I did not see anything special about the story. However, I do agree that Martinez does have a way with words. They were eye-catching and made you wonder. *Parrot in the Oven* is divided into chapters that each one focuses on one particular topic. While there is a subtle storyline throughout, the overall picture is blurred. There's that "missing link" that prevents you from knowing each characters in the book. Simply, there's no depth other than with Manny. The book is told from Manny's perspectives. His dad has lost his job. He simply goes to the local pool hall and spends whatever money he can find and gets drunk. The mother is constantly cleaning the house. His older brother is never home and constantly has a new job. His older sister is secretive. His baby sister is simply a brat. Manny tells his experiences with school, White people, boxing, and the gang. Most of all, he tells how these experiences impact his family and their world-view. *Parrot in the Oven* is an alright book. It's nothing that you'd go around and recommend this book to friends. Just simply ok. The only best thing is Martinez' ways with words.

I've read this book before (maybe 8 years ago?) and I loved it. But now, after re-reading it at older age I just have to lower the number of stars to 4. It was still really good, VERY catchy, I couldn't stop reading and I will always come back to it again. But in comparison to other books from the Velvet saga, I just couldn't quite relate to characters. I really wasn't a fan of a main heroine, she didn't seem to have all those qualities I usually love about Jude Deveraux's women. On the other hand Raine was cool, except of that damn feeling that he has to deal with everything alone and to fight instead of ask for help. But I do get that. What I LOVE about this book is that it brings me back to my favourite characters - Judith, Gavin, Steven and of course to my most beloved Bronwyn. I also liked to read about Joceline and even Blanche whom I known from the first two books. So to sum it up - I still liked the book a lot but I have some objections towards Alyx and didn't like her much.
Started off great but went dark at the end.....
