i love this book i dont know why so dont ask me. also i love hannah i think that is why.
Remarkably easy reading, runs smoothly almost like a novel. Very factual and true to history.

This was an interesting book. It was as if all the characters in the book knew everything that was going on, but it was only revealed to me slowly - back stories on the characters, issues between them, etc. A lot of writing on race relations on the east coast, also town/gown conflicts. I think I liked it, since I found myself thinking about the people after I was done with the book. I would like to try something else by her.

This is one of those rollicking, all-encompassing, full-service novels that bring you into the time and place, and teach you stuff you didn't know. In this case, masonry in the Middle Ages, plus the wool market and the church-state government system. The characters are full and you're with them for decades... a full escape from your own life can be had here. I've come back to this review to give it 5 stars now, upgraded from the 4 before (with my note that I'd have given it 4.5 stars if that were possible). The details of language inaccuracies, meaning modern words used in the Middle Ages, aren't enough to keep it from 5. I highly recommend it, especially for those who enjoy a book of over 1000 pages.
Man Booker Prize winner for 1985. A slow paced, descriptive book that explores a group of people staying at the Hotel du Lac in Switzerland. Brookner examines each with a sharp eye, capturing their vanities and social maneuverings with a sometimes less than sympathetic eye. Although this book was written in 1985, and (I believe) takes place in recent times, it read more like a mid-century novel with its descriptions of the social mores, and the way the characters reacted with and to one another. I wasn't sure I was going to finish this book shortly after starting it, but the writing kind of crept up on me, and by the end, I rather enjoyed it. This is a contemplative book, no action to speak of, and not a great deal of plot; just a lot of really good writing that at times is beautiful (especially in its descriptions of the hotel and the lake area). I'd give this book a 3 1/2 rating, but I have to downgrade it to a 3* vice 4*. Its just a little too stilted and "old-fashioned" for me to really appreciate it enough to give it a 4.

I could never read Teddy. It reminded me of a friend who died in high school--his name was teddy.

3.5. ish. ~~~~~~~~ *sigh* not what I was expecting. has anyone ever heard of "first is the worst, second the best.." and so on? well, except for the first wasn't the worst. whatever. I apologize for my very wimpy.reviews. so i'm gonna try to de-wimpifize this one. Evie is a "bag and tag" expert at the IPCA. except for the fact that there was no "bagging and tagging". whats up with that? Lend. lend, lend, lend. second favorite character. hes cool though. JACK. I. love. you. he's psycho! and thats why hes my favorite! he left her in the "faerie" paths. in the dark. YES! he's awesome & nuts! once upon a time, there was a guy with an attachment to a rather annoying girl. and his name is Reth. let. it. go. please leave. enough with all of this romantic crap! find. someone. else. Raquel. am I the only one who wants to punch her? shes like, "oh its all up to you to decide". and then like, "HA! nevermind. go find a paranormal, cause I say so! but hey! don't kill yourself! *sigh*" that made no sense. sorry. I miss tasey. now Evie feels all wimpy without that thing. she was all tough in the first book, and shes like oh im in love! nothing else matters! im sooo glad that jack was there, or I wouldve been boooored. all in all, it was ok. I didn't really want to even read this book but I wanted to finish the series. I'll still read the third book. ~~~~~~~ oh bleep, that was long. happy reading! -missrosey :) (that was still wimpy, sorry)

Quite peculiar but so fresh. Imagine finding a trove of old photos and not knowing anything about the photographer, subjects, dates, circumstances, etc. Then make up a story to fit the pictures. This is such a clever and creative book. I loved it and would suggest for any adult as well as a person as young as middle school age. This is Ransom Riggs first novel and hope not the last. Great reading that will stay with me for a long time.....................
