This book was definitely written with a movie adaptation in mind. Every chapter is a scene unto itself. Not a bad thing, by any means. The book moves really fast. If you like science fiction, you will probably enjoy this.

this book has a very haunting voice, especially the last chapter. it is about the asian concentration camps that our country saw fit during the red scare. the characters have no names and the symbolism isn't straight out... it is very subtle. but the sub plot is about a family who is accepting assimialtion into the american culture only to be out casted by it and then are forced to remember but never speak of who they "really" are in american culture.

I thought this was one of the best books I've read in a long time. I found myself looking up Vermeer's paintings to match them up with the story. I learned alot about the time period and art by reading this book. It was an entertaining story, and that is why I read historical fiction (I think some of the other reviews take themselves too seriously; its fiction -- enjoy it!). The movie is well done, but does not do the book justice. The scenes are very artistically put together, which makes it worth seeing. But, the characters and story line in the movie are much more shallow than in the book.
